Lydia Berreth

Lydia Berreth, 86, Mandan, died October 27, 2012 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at United Church of Christ, Bismarck, with Reverend Dr. Dale Kent officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Lydia was born on February 20, 1926, one of twin daughters to Jacob and Sophia (Sauter) Huber. Raised and educated in Carson, Lydia met Milton Berreth at church in the late thirties. After Milton left to serve in the Army, Lydia and her sisters, Frieda and Ella, went to Portland, OR to work at Jantzen Knitting Mills during the war. Milton returned home in December 1945 and they were married in Carson on January 27, 1946. They lived in Bismarck for one year and then made their home in Mandan. Lydia worked at Cloverdale and then in sales at JC Penney’s. She later worked in sales and draperies for Vantine Paint and Glass, a company that Milton managed. Through successful sales with the company, Lydia and Milton earned many trips, including, the Bahamas, Cancun, spent their 25th Anniversary in Mexico, Austria, North Africa, Spain, and Hawaii three times. They shared many wonderful times and made countless memories on their travels. Together they retired in 1985 and Lydia enjoyed working at Dayton’s in the linen department. Above all, Lydia was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a dedicated housewife, very particular about how she liked things. A wonderful cook, her family will especially miss her cheese buttons, butter noodles, and chocolate chip cookies. Spending the holidays together was something Lydia always treasured. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary and loved to spoil the girls in her family. Throughout the years Lydia remained very close to her sons through phone calls and visits. Especially important throughout her life was the immeasurable bond with her twin sister, Frieda. They shared everything throughout childhood, married life, raising their families, and into retirement. Their daily phone calls just to visit were a constant source of happiness and forever strengthened the love they had for each other. This wonderful woman will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her. Blessed to have shared her life is her husband of 66 years, Milton Berreth, Mandan; two sons, Dale (Julie) Berreth, Salt Lake City, UT and Gary (Sandy) Berreth, Nisswa, MN; six grandchildren, Todd (Meg) Berreth, Trevor and Teague Berreth, Allison Shephard, Erin (Tanner) Hunter, and Ryan (Angela) Berreth; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Ella Rieger, Portland, OR and her beloved twin sister, Frieda Diehl, Mandan; three brothers, Helmuth Huber, Benton Harbor, MI, Elmer (Delores) Huber, Tulsa, OK, and Wilbert (Bernice) Huber, Bismarck; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Huber, Benton Harbor, MI and Leah Huber, Tucson, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lydia was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ted, Carl (Ruth), Rev. Edwin Huber; a sister, Edna (Art) Lutz; sister-in-law, Lydia Huber; and brothers-in-law, Gideon Rieger and Edwin Diehl. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark and Faith Erickstad and his staff for the years of exceptional care. Memorials are preferred to United Church of Christ, Bismarck.
