Rigby Harting and Hagan Funeral Home - Media Obituary

The family of M. Carl Drott ("Carl"), Jr. is deeply saddened to announce that on May 6, 2021, he died peacefully at home. Carl was 78 years old; a long-time resident of Swarthmore, PA, he was a dedicated teacher and researcher.

Carl was born in Milwaukee to the late Milton Carl and Barbara (née Joy) Drott and raised in Wauwatosa, WI. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and obtained his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering. He received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1979 at Drexel University, where he taught for almost fifty years.

To his many students at Drexel, Carl was known for his driving passion for teaching and for his love of helping them both learn ideas and question them. He was an influential researcher and continually inspired his students’ work in the academic arena by incorporating those ideas that passed muster into his courses. He was also an ongoing source of “funny jokes” that, as part of his class material, helped his students remember the content and enjoy the process of learning.

Carl is survived by his wife of 38 years, Eva Maria Thury, and sons Jeffry Drott (partner: Stefanie Trautvetter) of Nashville, TN, Brian Drott (Malahn née Lasseter) of Spring Green, WI, and Milton “Mickey” Thury Drott (partner: Samantha Dresen) of Madison, WI. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother Marty, and his aunt Patty Arden (née Joy).

Additional surviving family include Carl's sister Jane Johnson (Ed), sister-in-law Lynn Drott (née Schroeder), uncle Bruce Arden (Peggy), and cousins Terry Schlinkmann (Judy née Weidman), John W. Drott, Jr. (Patty née Kongslien), Christina Huck née Lambrecht (Mike), Donna Usnick née Drott (John), Diane Steuernagel née Lambrecht, Laura Hopkins Heigl (John), Michelle Arden (Allen Aiken), and Wayne Arden.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Michigan’s Arts Engine Program for interdisciplinary teaching and learning in the arts, design, engineering, information sciences and technology. The best way to do this is to select Carl's name from the alphabetical list at:
