Mabel Hilda Roberts was born September 19, 1927 in Atlantic City, NJ. She departed this life on September 1, 2012 at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, with her daughter Karen and granddaughter Towana by her side. Mabel attended New York City Public Schools. She attended Hunter College where she pursued nursing, and later graduated at the top of her class with as a Registered Nurse. "Hilda" as she was known to many went on to work at Harlem Hospital for more than 20 years. She later came back to the Atlantic City area and worked at the Atlantic City Hospital for a number of years. After becoming ill, she left the nursing profession. Later she worked at the Traymore Hotel as a cashier. She was a daughter of the Elks. Hilda married the late George Robert Phillips and from that union, daughters Edith and Karen. Hilda was very soft spoken. She enjoyed listening to music and playing cards with friends. She enjoyed taking her first grandchild, Towana to the beach. Years later Hilda became ill once again and she resided at Eastern Pines Convalescent Home in Atlantic City and recently Mainland Manor in Pleasantville. Hilda was predeceased by: her parents, Maryjane and James Millner Roberts; brother, Isaac Russell Roberts; sisters-in-law, Estelle Lewis, Sarah Phillips, and Carrie Roberts. Mabel leaves to mourn: daughters, Edith and Karen; grandchildren Towana, Omar and Tevin; great-grandsons Umar and Ali; son-in-law Minister Richard Andrews; and a host of other nieces and nephews, and friends.
