SOLOMON--Mack B., an editor at The Wall Street Journal for 30 years, died November 21 while reading a book in his home in Jersey City. He was 85. Mack was the ultimate editor -- kind and precise, self-depreciating (he knew that that was preferred to "self-deprecating") and with great news...

Not sure what to say?

Mack and I were close friends from elementary school through high school. We studied together and played baseball together. He was a bright student and was almost the class salutatorian. We both attended our high school 50th graduation celebration together. I was so pleased to read about his long and illustrious career with the Wall Street Journal. Robert Struck, Ph.D., Cancer Chemotherapy Scientist

Such a sweet, smart, witty man. He will be missed.

Mack and I served together in the Army while stationed at the Psychological Warfare Center, Fort Bragg. We remained friends for more than 60 years and reunited several times during the last decade. We shared an appreciation for great puns.

Everyone at The Wall Street Journal liked and respected Mack, who was a complete gentleman and a journalist devoted to quality work. I was glad to know him for over 50 years.

I feel privileged to have known Mack. He was a big reason that I immediately realized upon joining WSJ that its editors were a heck of a lot smarter than I was. He always gave me good advice and he was kind about doing so.

Ms Gaughan: Your brother Mack was one of the most widely admired and respected editors ever to work for The Wall Street Journal. The editing he pursued in the Journal's gloriest years helped its constant growth in circulation and global influence; but to those of us who worked with him, he was a personal treasure -- a good and honest guy, generous, funny and decent, the role model of a mensch.

I offer my sincere condolences to the Solomon family. Although I have no connection to the late Mr. Solomon, I was moved to sign the guest book by the lovely obituary I read in this morning's NYTimes. Someone with deep knowledge and love for Mr. Solomon must have written it. Well done.

Mack was. a great journalist and a wonderful man. We all loved him.
My condolences,
Dan Hertzberg

To the Solomon Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
