Madeline Rose Nelson, 82, of Virginia died peacefully in her home on Sunday. She was born April 23, 1925 in Hibbing to Jack and Theresa Smokrovich. She attended school in Hibbing. After a short time living in New Jersey and Ohio, she settled back on the Iron Range where she held various jobs, including a cook at the Northern Pines Cafe in Eveleth and a nurse's aid at the Arrowhead Nursing Home in Virginia. Madeline married Henry Manske on July 5, 1956 in Ely, Minn., and they lived in rural Eveleth until Henry's death in 1975. On Feb. 14, 1978 she married George Nelson and moved to Highland, Indiana. Upon retirement, George and Mandy became 'snowbirds' spending winters in Arizona and summers in Minnesota. They traveled over many parts of the United States, visiting friends and relatives along the way. After losing George to cancer in 2004, Mandy settled into the Meadowbrook Apartments to be near her children. Madeline, also known by many as Mandy or 'Munda' was a very vivacious person who enjoyed visiting with her family, going to the casino and above all, dancing. She attended the weekly dances every Sunday night at the Serviceman's Club and particularly enjoyed the polka. She will be missed by many. Madeline is preceded in death by her husbands, George Nelson and Henry Manske; her daughter, Joann Newstrand; a brother, Jack Smokrovich; and two sisters, Mary VanHoosier and Lucille (Lutsa) Hanegmon and her parents. Madeline is survived by her children, Carolyn (John Dean) Feinberg of Lakeville, Sam (Terri) Crispo of Saginew, Patty (Keith) Maki of Gilbert, Mary Lou (Mike) Hamari of Virginia and Jill (Bill) Paulson of Mt. Iron; sisters, Ann Pluth of Chisholm, and Martha Collyard of Hibbing; 14 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. VISITATION:12 noon Wednesday Jan. 16, until the 1 p.m. Memorial Service in Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Virginia. Pastor Mary Pol will officiate. Family services provided by Bauman-Cron Funeral Home, A Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia. To share a personal remembrance of Mandy online, please see www.baumanfuneralhome.com
