Madeline Helen Whalen (nee Smith)

Madeline passed away suddenly but peacefully in her sleep. A lifelong resident of Bay Ridge, she was the youngest daughter of the late John and Helen Smith.

Madeline was the beloved wife of Peter and a devoted mother to Peter Jr. and Victoria Patricia. She also cherished her three dogs, Gibbs, Rossie, and Cooper. She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas John, and her sister, Patricia Anne. She is survived by her sister, Catherine Stropoli, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Madeline grew up in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where she attended both grammar school and high school. During her time there, she played basketball, participated in softball, and sang in the choir, forming many lifelong friendships and cherished memories.

Professionally, Madeline worked on Wall Street, initially at W.E. Pollock, followed by Swiss Bank, and she retired from Barclay Bank. After her retirement, she dedicated her time to caring for her two children and her mother, Helen.

In 1984, Madeline met the love of her life, Peter, and they were married in 1992. They welcomed their son, Peter Jr., in 1995 and their daughter, Victoria Patricia, in 2002.

Madeline made lasting friendships through her involvement in NYPD Emerald Society trips, annual camping trips to KOA campgrounds in Newburgh, NY, and her children's sporting events and extracurricular activities. She was a lifelong fan of the New York Mets, New York Rangers, and New York Giants. She treasured her family, maintaining connections through gatherings, phone calls, social media interactions, and quick visits. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

May she rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Madeline's memory to the Hudson Valley Humane Society.
