Madge Barney Obituary

Madge Lavette (DuBell) Barney, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully Friday, June 29, 2012, surrounded by family at her residence at Wise Living in Orleans. Madge is survived by her children, Trisha Daly-Karlson and her husband, Jeffrey Karlson, and son, Peter MacAvoy and his wife, Judith MacAvoy; as well as grandchildren, Alexandra Daly, Jessica Daly, Kevin Daly, Erik Karlson, Lisa Bentley, Peter MacAvoy Jr., Mathew MacAvoy, Josh MacAvoy, Shane MacAvoy, and Christopher MacAvoy; and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Madge was married to Henry MacAvoy of Philadelphia's Main Line until his death in 1960. She later married James Scott Barney, an engineer in the burgeoning air and space industry at General Electric. They resided in Bryn Mawr, Pa., until 2007 where Madge devoted more than 20 years to volunteer work with the American Red Cross. Madge also volunteered at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Madge was known for her elegant beauty as well as her fun sense of humor, love of cats, and her devotion to her family. She enjoyed her regular lunches with the Red Cross ladies as well as spending time with her children and their families. Teasing and playing with grandchildren and later great-grandchildren, and sitting on the back porch with James and their cats watching the squirrels gave her joy. She had a great memory for songs, many of them silly, some extremely old, which she frequently sang to whomever was fortunate enough to be her companion at the time. In 2007, both aging, Madge and James moved to Cape Cod to be near family. James unfortunately passed away that same month. Madge embraced her life on Cape Cod and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with her great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful, light-hearted woman who brought joy to her family and friends. A memorial service will be held July 16, at 10 am., at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Orleans. The family requests that in honor of Madge's devotion to the Red Cross and her love of stray and needy animals, that donations be made in her name to the MSPCA at www.MSPCA.org or the American Red Cross . Trisha, Peter and family,
Memories from our childhood flooded back when I read that your mother has passed away. Your mother was truly one of my fondest memories. I am sorry for your loss, but, rejoice that you had her company for so long.
Fondly,
Eileen McCabe Malloy (Penn Valley, PA)
