Magnolia was born June 10, 1928, the third child of Nathaniel and Mary Etta Willis Dabney. They lived in rural DeSoto County, Mississippi in a community called Motown.
Magnolia's older siblings, Lula Corine and Adarphas joined her in attending many bible studies and church activities as well as the farm work. Her sister would write songs about a mother's love and have her sing them during church programs.
She studied cosmetology, became a certified nursing assistant and finally spent years as a private duty nurse. One of the proudest moments was when she received her GED.
