Not sure what to say?

I know that today is Mal Deckers birthday. I was in his first 7th grade class he taught at Garretson Heights Elementary School. He was so handsome and so much fun to be around. He called me Mitzi because he said I looked like Mitzi Gainer. I loved that! He was a good friend to my brother Larry too. Thank you Mr Decker for all you did for Rodeo!

Mr. Decker, Thank You for the Support. You are one of the Greats from the Greatest Generation. You shall be missed but the skills you transferred to all of us will continue to be passed down through many generations. We were relishing the instances so much that we did not recognize the life skills you were teaching us. Coaching, Bat-boy, Wood-shop, Fishing, Umpire Crew, Physical Education, Sportsmanship, Competition, Civility, Humility. Mission Accomplished! Job Well Done! Like hundreds /...

Honored to have known this wonderful gentleman.

More than fifty years ago, I was sitting on the Garretson Heights gymnasium stage with Tim Falkenstein when Mal walked into the gym carrying a white box and wearing a brilliant orange football jersey. Mal noticed us and walked across the hardwood floor. "Where did you get that cool jersey?" I asked. Mal opened the box he was carrying and displayed a green and white football jersey and another one in colors I don't remember. "I got em' in Vallejo, at the sporting goods...

I count myself as one of the lucky generations that had the privilege of being taught, coached, and mentored by Mal Decker. His physical education classes were among the highlights of my days spent at Garretson Junior High. As my 8th grade basketball coach he worked tirelessly with me trying to get the "proper backspin" on my jump-shot. As my high school athletic days were coming to a close, Mal saw something in me that led him to invite me to help coach the girls basketball teams at John...

Too many stories to share...but Mal Decker was one of the kindest individuals that I have met. Wether helping with younger people, coaching them in sports and life or helping out at our church by removing a tree that had fallen or removing a large pile of debris in our lower parking lot that someone decided to illegally dump. He was an incredibly helpful and reliable man. As someone said earlier "one of the good guys". My condolences to Mal´s family and friends.

It was late summer. We had just finished the eighth grade and were wondering what high school would be like. A group of us were playing a pick up game of basketball. He came up to the fence and called out to us. We thought he was going to say something to us about climbing over the locked gate to the school yard. Nope. He said, 'You guys look thirsty.' He handed over the fence some sodas. Each and every one of us said, "Thank you Mr. Decker." Later that evening I told my dad about...

If you attended Garretson Heights Grammar School in the 60´s you had to have known Mal Decker. My two sisters and I were always involved in sports at school...softball, volleyball and basketball and he was always there. We grew up with our friends at the baseball field. He taught us how to keep score at baseball games, he watered down the field to teach us how to slide, my best friend and I ran the timer for boys basketball games, and we were at the Garretson gym playing badminton all summer....
