Malcom Nichols Obituary

Malcom Conrad Nichols Jr.

November 2, 1920 - September 20, 2014

SALEM - Malcom C. Nichols Jr., born November 2, 1920 in Thornton, ID to Malcom Conrad Nichols and Anna Edna Naef, died quietly at his home September 20, 2014 at age 93 in the company of his wife, Lorraine Cunningham Nichols, of 68 years. Malcom dedicated his life to the service of those around him by serving his community and friends through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Boy Scouts of America, and setting a loving example of friendship to those he encountered on a daily basis.

An Eagle Scout and lifelong Boy Scout, Malcom served his Church as a missionary and his country in World War II in the US Maritime Service. He has served as a chaplain at the Salem Hospital, as a member of the Oregon Mayflower Society, and with the Lions Club. Malcom is remembered by his wife, Lorraine, and family, Dr. Rodney and Darlene Nichols of Portland, OR; Pamela and Carl Nicolaysen of Nampa, ID; and Lori Nichols of Kansas City, KS. He enjoyed his eight grandchildren: Jeremy and Jeffrey Nichols; Julia, Stanley, Stephen and Bret Nicolaysen; and Jacob and Joshua Fellows and 15 great grandchildren.

His legacy of friendship and service will be remembered in the hearts of countless nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends that have been touched by his spirit. Malcom and his family would like to thank the host of friends and caregivers that have blessed his and Lorraine's lives with loving compassionate service during their elderly years.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, September 24, at the LDS Stake Center, 4450 Lone Oak Road SE, Salem. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. Interment will be at the Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.

Malcolm was one of the most cheerful people I ever had the privilege to know. He always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye. I knew him since I was very little and he was a wonderful friend to my family. I'll never forget when I was working at Macy's and he came in one day to pick out a ladies suit for his sweet wife as a gift. We settled on peach :) I gift wrapped it and he left with a wink... a few weeks later I received a letter he had typed up and sent to Macy's, praising me for being attentive and helping him pick out the perfect suit for his wife. I still have it framed :) He was a sincere, admirable person and I have no doubt he is sharing that same loving spirit where he is now :)

Malcolm was always one of my favorite customers. For the last 3 decades or so, I have always enjoyed putting together boxes of candy for him. I loved his sense of humor and I really enjoyed talking with him. At See's Candies in Salem, he will be missed and remembered fondly.

Sorry to hear of Malcom's passing--we heard from Marilyn Holley in SLC. Malcom was one of my late mother's (Catherine Holley Bowen) favorite cousins, and was always a stalwart supporter of family reunions.

I was so sorry to hear of Malcom's passing. I wish I had read the paper earlier yesterday or I would have gone to his service. The joy of having you both as our neighbors for myself and my folks is a memory we will always have. Mowing the lawn between our two places with Malcom is some of my fun days up here on the hill. My best to you Lorraine and my Love, Sherry Ashmun

Dear Sister Nichols, Rod, Pam and Lori. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your husband and father. I have so many fond memories of growing up with all of you in Salem and wish I could be at the funeral. Please know my thoughts will be with you. Malcom was always such a wonderful, friendly, and loving person to see, whether at church, the store or the hospital. I loved how he always referred to my parents as "kids"! Prayers for peace and comfort for the entire Nichols family. We love you all!

Deepest sympathies to the family. Malcom Nichols was a kind and cheerful man. As a teenager I regularly visited the Nichols' home and enjoyed visiting with both Malcom and Lorraine. Always the cheerful smile; always the kind word.

Malcolm will be truly missed. He always went out of his way to make you feel special or the only person he was talking to I have known him almost all my life , I have known him since I was eight when my family (mom & dad) joined the church. He was always there, and I think he was our home teacher at that time . Laura (Miller) Williams. Turner ward

Dear Lorraine and family, I wish to send my condolences at this time, representing my husband, Mel Holley, who passed away last year. He would have wanted to be there. He thought so highly of Malcolm. May the Lord be with you and bless you at this time. Marilyn Holley

Lorraine lived across the street where I grew up in Layton, Utah. She and Malcolm would walk across the street to visit my family sometimes and my earliest memory of Malcolm was that he could light up the room with his radiant smile and his ability to make one feel absolutely like the most important person that ever lived.
Later my family moved to the Northwest and then to Salem and we had the pleasure to rub shoulders with Malcolm and Lorraine many times over the years. There again he would spot me in a crowd at a church function or somewhere else and would look me directly in the eyes and with the most genuine smile proceed to make me feel like I was the most outstanding individual he had ever met.
My heart goes out to Lorraine and their family!!! Sincerely, Alison Layton Wadsworth

Malcolm endeared himself to us as chaplains at Salem Hospital with his "I really appreciate you guys!" every time we saw him. His leadership of the LDS Chaplains was a role he cherished, because he cherished the men and women he worked with. We could always count on him, day and night, to cover any calls for patient care. His enthusiasm, commitment, compassion and smile will be greatly missed. He was an inspiration to us and truly a champion of the hospital and our staff. He was highly respected and a man of faith. We thank his family for sharing him with us. We send our sincere thoughts and prayers for his family.
