Malvin Wessel Obituary

Malvin Lee Wessel

On September 16, 2016, at almost 83 years of age, God unexpectedly called Malvin Lee Wessel home to His green pastures of Heaven. Mal, a Korean War Veteran, was an FBI Senior Resident Agent whose territory covered San Bernardino County. He was a member of Barstow's government holding the offices of City Councilman and Mayor. Mal, along with wife Connie, were members of the business community and founded Hi-Desert Charities and the Barstow Rodeo Stampede. They worked together to help countless individuals and organizations. Mal is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ruth Wessel; son, Joseph Wessel; daughter, Lynn Wessel-Tanza; and grandson, Steven Wessel-Tanza. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Constance Ruth Flowerbird Wessel; daughters, Terry Saenz and Shawn Wessel; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several other family members and friends. Services will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Barstow. In lieu of flowers, please donate to his non profits: Barstow Rodeo Group and/or Hi-Desert Charities at Desert Community Bank of Barstow.

When our family moved to Barstow I was lucky enough to meet Shawn. My parents didn't know anyone here and were not allowed to do many things. I can remember that when Mal called the house to invite me along with their activities my Dad would always say, "Why of course Mr. Wessel, Lynn can go along." Shawn and I would squeal in the back ground knowing that the fun was about to begin! I think he was the only one I was allowed out after dark with. I loved, loved, loved being with the Wessel's. I used to take such pride when an unknown person would mistake me for one of Mal's girls (of course we looked more like each other than the Wessel girls did)! He would wink my way and smile and own me just like one of his girls. It was magical for a grade school girl. He is a huge part of my childhood memories and I will miss his "honey bun" greetings. How fortunate are we to have known someone that makes saying good bye so difficult. Love you Dad.....(I mean Mal). XOXOXO

Our heartfelt prayers go out to the entire Wessel family, especially Connie.
I had the opportunity to sit on the very first committee for the Barstow Rodeo with Mal. He loved Barstow and only wanted the best for the community. Such a kind man.
