Not sure what to say?

This is very late, but I was thinking about Schauff today and looked him up. I will always remember Schauff for his kindness, enthusiasm and willingness to share. He was a big influence on me and my father as well. I was sad when he left Catlin Gabel, but knew it was time to share him with others. May he rest in peace, knowing that he helped so many. with love and respect, Joe Greeley

To All of Schauff's Family and Friends,

I am so very sorry for your loss.

I had the great privilege one summer of helping Schauff with the sailing portion of the Zushi Kaisei exchange program. Before I signed on to help, I had only met Schauff a time or two, but as soon as we started working together, Schauff immediately became a wonderful friend, colleague, and mentor. Onboard the boats with the Japanese students, we all came together and cooked stir fry dinners and pancake...

My son was at Catlin for only four years, grades 4-7. Schauff embodied what we appreciated most about the school... warm spirit, enthusiasm for new approaches to teaching, pleasure in the unique qualities of each student. I enjoyed engaging with him in my occasional volunteer efforts at the school. Such a good human being...

I served with Schauff in WWII on LCI 948. It was a pleasure to have known him. All the best to Verna, Alan and Robin.

Dear Verna,
After expressing the hope in this guest bookn for a large turnout, I regret that a schedule conflict will keep me from attending the memorial. This happened suddenly and involves a commitment, as a freelance journalist, that I cannot back out of. I apologize to you, Debbie, Robin, Allen and any Hillside alumni who may have anticipated my presence.

To All the Family...I had hoped to be there at Catlin-Gabel tomorrow but seems like the drive is going to be too iffy for me, at 86, so I'll have to miss seeing all the loved ones from Schauff's past and from mine. Drat! He is a most remarkable man and I count myself very fortunate to have been a colleague of his from 1962-67...wish it could have been longer, but as a widow with three young children I had to move on in degrees and cash for us all to survive. I have written to Verna but to ...

Wow,.....Shauff was an incredible & amazing human being. I had the privilege of participating in a Summer Theatre Workshop that he led and it was one of the best, most interesting experiences of my life. We all learned a lot and as well as experiencing quite an adventure. Shauff was a real treasure and a delight to be with.

My deepest condolences go to the family as I feel your loss. He is simply irreplaceable as such fantastic & unselfish people are simply quite rare now.

Schauff was an exceptional, great, imaginative teacher. He also made sure I would never, ever chew gum. I have appreciated him all these years and hope his ideas live forever.

My thoughts go out to the Schauffler family and those form Catlin Gabel of the old days. So many things that Schauff taught me all those years ago resonate today. In addition to the ones already mentioned I would add "The best way to get to know a fellow is to pick up the other end of whatever he is carrying." He was the very definition of excellence in education and leadership.
