Marcella "Marcy" Schumacher, 84 passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 from heart and lung complications at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. Marcy was a 44 year resident of Salinas. She worked for the Monterey County Department of Social Services, and was a member of Temple Beth El, serving as President twice. In so many ways Marcy was a pillar of the community. While at the department she was in charge of training thereby educating a generation of social workers. As Temple president she conducted outreach not only to the Jewish Community, but to the community at large through charitable works. Later in life she continued giving back to the community by reading to children on a regular basis at the Steinbeck Library and for many years delivering foods to those who could not venture out through the Meals on Wheels program. She was one of the driving forces behind the creation of a service center for seniors in Salinas. When not in Salinas, Marcy loved to be exposed to the world at large. Over the course of her life she traveled to every inhabited continent, returning time and again to beloved spots such as Israel. She loved going on cruises which is only a part of her love for the sun, beach, sand and water. The only thing that would make it better for Marcy would be a well written mystery novel or a trip to a casino in Tahoe or Vegas. Marcy was rarely alone. She was fun loving but more than that she was wise. It was not only her husband and her children that benefitted from her wisdom, but also her friends and the friends of her children who sought her out for her advice, counsel, her ability to accept and keep a confidence and to render judgments that were both appropriate and useful. In so many ways, Marcy embodied the best of America in the 20th century. She was hardworking and practical, kind and giving, mindful of the world at large, but dedicated to making her family, her community, her town and indeed, her country, better – one act at a time. Survivors: beloved Husband for 61 years Melvin Schumacher, Children, Barry (Kyna Rubin) Schumacher, Anna Schumacher and Sari Schumacher, Grandchildren Mimi, Izell, Alex, Mark, Aaron and David She will be sorely and forever missed by all she touched. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10:00 am at Temple Beth El, 1212 Riker St., Salinas, CA 93901. In Celebration of Marcy's life, please do not wear black. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to donor's favorite charity.
