Margaret Mazyck Addison was born on January 30, 1936, to John R. Mazyck and Maria Small Mazyck in Cross, South Carolina. She transitioned into eternal life on August 15, 2022, at her home following an extended illness. Her parents and her sister, Elouise Felder, precede her in death.
Affectionately known as Marg, Margaret was reared in Holly Hill, South Carolina, and was educated in the Holly Hill Public Schools. She graduated valedictorian from Roberts High School in 1955 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Morris College in 1959. Her postgraduate studies include earning a Master's and Specialist of Education degree.
Margaret was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Beaufort Addison, Sr. of St. Stephen, SC, on September 13, 1959, and they were married for nearly 63 years. This union was blessed with four children.
Margaret was a faithful member of Lovely Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Holly Hill. There, she served as a deaconess, missionary, usher, and chairperson of various committees until her illness would no longer allow her to perform her duties.
Margaret worked in Orangeburg County Public Schools District #3 for 28 years as an English teacher, Director of Special Education, Assistant Superintendent, and Associate Superintendent. In addition, she was an educational consultant with the South Carolina Commission on Higher Learning. Margaret’s passion was ensuring students and families in her community received equitable educational experiences and were prepared to compete with more prominent school districts.
Margaret was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg and a member and Trustee Emeritus of the Medical University of South Carolina. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Jeddah Court #86 in Orangeburg, Tri-County Chamber of Commerce, and a founding member of the Alex Haley Contempo Social Club of Holly Hill. She was active in her community and participated in Meals-on-Wheels and other civic organizations. In addition, Margaret was the owner/operator of Utopia Restaurant & Lounge in Holly Hill. She shared her heart and good food with people for over 30 years and was well known for her fried chicken, bread pudding, and Christmas fruit cake. She was a master at Bid Whist.
Margaret leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted husband, Beaufort; her four children, Beaufort (Sheila) Addison, Jr. of Orangeburg, SC, Jonathan (Yvonne) Addison, Sr. of Raleigh, NC, Kevin (Barbara) Addison, Sr. of Holly Hill, SC, and Angela (Baldwin) Void of Upper Marlboro, MD; nine grandchildren, Terenthial (Elizabeth) White of Moore, SC, Beaufort (Keith Northcutt) Addison, III of Stone Mountain, GA, Giovonni (Jordan) Carter of Kennesaw, GA, Kevin Addison, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Jonathan (Alexis) Addison, Jr. of Knightdale, NC, Genell Addison of Norristown, PA, Ashley Addison of Carrboro, NC, Donovan Addison of Glendale, AZ, and Gabrielle Void of Upper Marlboro, MD; three great-grandchildren, Treylen, Tyler and Morgan White of Moore, SC; three brothers, Harris Mazyck of Miami, FL, John (Gloria) Mazyck, Jr. of Orangeburg, SC, Willie (Millicent) Mazyck of Augusta, GA; five sisters, Doretha Shepard and Henrietta James of Holly Hill, SC, Patricia (Jack) Johnson of Cheraw, SC, Maria (James) Brown of Evans, GA, and Mildred (Jesse) Brown of Orangeburg, SC; two sisters-in-law, Mattie Gethers of Moncks Corner, SC and Elizabeth Addison of North Charleston, SC; one aunt, Bertha Wigfall of Suffolk, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, and extended family.

My sincere condolences to the Addison and Myzck families on the loss of Mrs. Addison. She was a personal inspiration and a role model for me since meeting her when she enrolled her son, Beaufort, in my class at Roberts Elementary. He and I became long-term friends (over 50 years).
