Bloy and my mother had been friends since their teens.
Once she was visiting us in Geneva during a trip to Europe with a friend. Her friend saw our collection of Bloy's books, most of which had gone through the hands of four children by then. Bloy's friend noted the state the books were in - dog-eared, frayed, torn, stained and in some cases falling apart. She asked Bloy if she was upset that her books were in such bad shape.
