Manning-Heffern-O’Neill Funeral Home - Pawtucket Obituary

Margaret M. Jacoby was born on November 10, 1930, and deceased on April 21, 2024 as a resident of Mount Saint Rita in Cumberland.

She was an astronomer and the observatory at Community College of Rhode Island is named in her honor. She was the founder of the College’s physics department and secured the funding for the construction of the observatory which was constructed in 1978. Margaret shared her love of astronomy not only with her students, but also with countless families who visited her observatory for a glimpse of our beautiful universe. Her dedication to science and teaching was acknowledged on November 15, 1995, when the observatory was rechristened the “Margaret M. Jacoby Observatory.” Margaret’s commitment to teaching can be summarized by the following quote in an article by David Huestis in 2004 which states, “I think it is important not just to make scientists out of (students) but to open them up to the universe, so that when they read things in the paper or on TV, they can be a little more critical because they have some background.”

One of the high points of her career was a trip on the QE2 where she was a guest lecturer and astronomer for the voyage. She recounted that experience with a smile. She travelled worldwide to view eclipses, comets and other events.

She is now at rest amongst the stars, comets and planets she so loved. She would be delighted to know that you visited the observatory named in her honor.

A funeral mass is scheduled in her honor, at St. Teresa’s Church, Newport Avenue, Pawtucket at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Burial shall be private.

Not sure what to say?

I am very saddened to learn of Ms. Jacoby’s passing. She suddenly came into my thoughts last night, so I searched and found the sad news. As one of her students, she had a big influence on my life. I learned a lot from her about astronomy and teaching, and was honored to be her work-study student for quite a few years. I have a lot of good memories of my time in her classes. During my last semester at CCRI, my astronomy class was tasked with going through the process of choosing the location...

'Peggy' and her mother were family friends when we were growing up. Her stories of her trips were always fascinating. She sparked my love of traveling. She will be missed by many.

I knew Peggy all my life as I am her only living first cousin. She was delightful person always smiling and laughing and of course brilliant. No ego. We kept in touch all our lives until we lost touch in late 2021. She grew up in Pawtucket after her father passed in Fall River Mass. in 1938 when Peggy was only 8. Several years later her mother Cecilia, sister Cecilia and Peggy moved to Pawtucket where her mother Cecilia grew up with her sisters; Anna, Margaret (Greta), Mary and brother...

I was one of Miss Jacoby's student assistants at the CCRI Observatory and we remained friends for many years. I always enjoyed the stories of her eclipse trips and had the pleasure of assisting with the Haley's Comet Watch. She was a good friend and will be greatly missed.

I am so very sorry to learn of Ms Jacoby’s passing. I had the great pleasure of being one of her many students who enjoyed her lessons and especially the use of the observatory that is now dedicated to her.

Professor Jacoby had an intense interest in astronomy that infected all who had the opportunity to be part of the many public open observatory sessions. These sessions were meant to be fun and educational but always designed to increase a sense of astronomical wonder. She had a...
