Whitlock Mortuary, Inc. Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Banks Lyles, age 92, of Toccoa, went Home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Pruitt Health of Toccoa. Born January 9, 1924 in Commerce, Ga., she was the daughter of the late John William and Virgie Melissa Caroline Lewallen Banks. Margaret was a devoted homemaker and took care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and loved spending time in the kitchen and sharing her meals with her family, neighbors, and friends. At an early age, she learned to crochet and over the years, she made countless afghans and doilies in which she proudly gave to her children and grandchildren. Even up until the last couple of years of her life, she spent countless hours crocheting to pass the time. Margaret also had a knack for growing flowers, especially African Violets. She always took special care of the flowers in her yard. She was a faithful, long-time member of Zebulon Baptist Church where she served in many capacities of the church throughout the years. Family members include her children, Eddie and Marlene Banks of Carnesville, Linda Lyles of Clarkesville, Karen and Mike Ivester of Toccoa, and Judy Floyd of Toccoa; grandchildren, Carla Murray, Lori Crowe, Keri and Michael Zaino, Kristy and John Bailey, Vince Floyd, Alea Morris, Alan and Kristy Banks, LeAnn Floyd, Adam and Ashley Ivester; great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Eudora Banks of Commerce; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Spencer Lyles; her son-in-law, Tommy Floyd; and her siblings. A service to celebrate her life will be held at three o'clock Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Zebulon Baptist Church with her family conducting the service and providing the music. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, John, in the Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Matt Bowman officiating at the graveside service. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers; Vince Floyd, Adam Ivester, Michael Zaino, John Bailey, Wesley Kelley, and Marty Roberts. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 12 noon until 2:30 Saturday, May 21, 2016. Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Aunt Margaret was a beautiful, gentle Southern Lady. You could call her"Lady Margaret" and it would fit her perfectly. My memory of how she was always dressed , looked beautiful and how sweet she was to all. She and her sister Aunt Ruth would be so proud of their cooking skills they offered at each Banks reunion. Wonderful memories and times. So thankful Ed and the girls had her for 92 years, what a legacy.

There's so much to remember about Margaret. I'll never forget the times I spent in her home as a teenager when spending the night there. There was always plenty of good food on the table, singing around the piano, sitting around just talking, and worshipping with her at Zebulon. Then when my children came along, she babysat them when I needed someone. What a wonderful lady! Today she is singing in the heavenly choir with her sweet companion, Johnny - and I bet Mother is playing the piano...
