Margaret Routon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2017.
Margaret Viola Dunn Routon, 89, went peacefully to join her beloved Jesus and her precious husband, Richard, in Heaven on January 25, 2017.

Born in Lynchburg on January 16, 1928, she was the last child of Ollie Bryant Dunn and William Henry Dunn. She married the love of her life, Richard Herman Routon on April 12, 1944. They were together 57 years until his death in 2001. Margaret was preceded in death by her sisters, Belle Hughes, Lucy Thomas, and Louise Tolley; brothers, Johnny Dunn and Frank Dunn; son, James R. Routon; and grandson, Jonathan Routon.

Margaret loved living in the country. She was very proud of her Native American Heritage. She liked nothing better than walking in the fields, sitting by the river, listening to the rain, watching the snow fall and sitting on the back porch with her kitty cat babies, Beauty, Baby, and Sweetie, and listening to old hymns.

She is survived by her sons, Steven A. (Amy) of Laguna Niguel, CA, Michael R.B. (Faye) of Madison Heights, whose home she shared for the last year of her life, and Carl E. (Pandora) of Lenoir, NC; daughter-in-law, Sandra Routon of Rustburg; brother-in-law, David Routon of Forest; and sisters-in-law, Elsie Franklin of Evington and Peggy Routon of Lynchburg. She was so proud of her large extended family of 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, numerous loving nieces and nephews in Virginia, Tennessee, Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Arizona, special friend Joan Merrill and many lifelong friends. She will also be missed by Rosie and Millie, her adopted grandbabies at Mike and Faye's.

She was a long-time member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church where she was a children's Sunday School teacher for many years. She also attended Leawood Baptist Church in her old Dearington neighborhood.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Okin, Dr. John Williams and Centra Hospice Staff for the care they provided during her long life. Special thanks from the family to Hospice staff Tina and Katie for taking such good care of her. Also to Roger from Hospice for helping her laugh and sing and bring back good memories and Delores and Vern for their loving care and companionship.

A celebration of Mom's life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Richmond Highway, Lynchburg with Pastor Mark Tinsley officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet United Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
