Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth Obituary

Margaret L. Wilson

Margaret Lois Wilson, 98, longtime resident of Indianapolis, died in Frankenmuth, MI on June 1, 2021. Margaret was born March 25, 1923 near Wolcott, IN to John Alexander and Rosa Mae (Morehead) Wilson. Graduating from Wolcott High School in 1941, she then received her BA in elementary education from Manchester College (1945) and her master’s degree from Butler University (1949).  In 1952 she did post graduate work at Columbia University.

As an elementary teacher for over four decades, from 1945 until her retirement in 1990, hundreds of students in the Speedway Public Schools benefited from Miss Wilson’s dedication to their education and wellbeing. Miss Wilson stayed in touch with many former students taking joy in their accomplishments and watching out for them throughout the years.  After retirement, she continued her love of education, participating in an after-school tutoring-mentoring program at John Knox Presbyterian Church where she was a longtime member. Margaret was a 50 year member of P.E.O. Chapter DX-Avon. Margaret’s summers were spent helping on the farm where she grew up, which she referred to simply as “home.” When her nieces and nephews visited the farm, she as the beloved aunt, lavished them with love and attention.  Forever the teacher, she helped them with schoolwork and farm life. An independent woman who took great interest in the world, Margaret was constantly learning and helping others. Always ready for an adventure, Margaret enjoyed many trips across the US and several trips to England, Scotland, and Wales where she visited distant cousins in Scotland. Starting the summer after she retired, Margaret spent most of a year on a 36’ sailboat, sailing through the Great Lakes, along the Erie Canal and down the Atlantic coast to Florida and then across to the Bahamas before returning up the east coast to NC.  Loved by her family, her church, and her community Margaret was known for her generous spirit continually giving of her time and resources whenever there was a need.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Betty (Zip) Schubert, Ruth (Virgil) St. John, Frances Bottom; infant brother, Norman Wilson; and nephew, Glenn Schubert. She is survived by nieces, Sandy (Roger) Yerion, Jan (Jim) Amy, Deb (Rick) Mishler, Jane (Steve) Clarke, Carol (Ken) Pawlak, Sharon (Blair) Warman; nephew, Steve Bottom (Susan); and niece-in-law, Beth Schubert, along with numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

For those wanting to make a memorial gift, please consider: The Margaret Wilson Scholarship at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 3000 N. High School Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46224 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

A service for the interment of ashes will be held at a later date.

Not sure what to say?

Miss Wilson was my third grade teacher at Newby Elementary School in Speedway. She was my favorite teacher of all times. She is one of the reasons that I spent my life as a teacher. She also was my son's teacher in both kindergarten and first grade. To this day we still talk about her impact on us in so many ways. She was everything a great teacher should be. She was kind, smart, patient, understanding, caring and always encouraging her students do their best. We kept in contact with her...

Aunt Margaret, how I love you. I write this with sadness and a heavy heart. I’m sure you and mom are having a party! My love for you is endless and forever.
You taught me to stand on my own two feet and be a strong woman. Your guidance lives on in my two girls who love you and have great memories of you. Your strength lives on in them.
I regret not spending more time with you, but distance can do that to us as humans.
I love you, and you live on through those of us who were...

I had Miss Wilson for 3rd grade at Newby and delivered the newspaper to the house where she lived on Beeler Avenue. I often wondered what happened to her, little did I know that she was still with us. Here's to her glorious life and the wonderful and lasting impact she had on her students from Speedway Indiana. She will be missed but never forgotten.

Margaret was a very special friend to our family as was her mother. She always had time for us, even my grandchildren. She will always have a special spot in my heart.

Great Aunt Margaret was kind, caring and intelligent. I remember her quizzing me on spelling over the phone, and always taking time to talk with me and take interest in my life when we were together. We will miss you Great Aunt Margaret.

Margaret was my Aunt and took care of me for many summers on the farm in Wolcott, IN. She taught me important skills including how to shoot a gun, drive a car, poison gophers and pick and shuck sweet corn. Aunt Margaret doted on her nieces and nephews, providing games and fun activities to keep us entertained. Caring and generous, she was always ready to share what she had. Whenever you talked to Aunt Margaret she was curious and interested in where you were, what you were doing and how life...

Miss Wilson - Teacher- 1957

Miss Wilson was my teacher at the Newby Elementary School in Speedway during my third grade year in 1956-57. I always considered her o to be one of by favorite teachers growing up. I am sorry that we never reconnected after my school years. I know she is and will be missed by many of my fellow Sparkplugs. Rest well Miss Wilson, I'm sure you will teach them a thing or two up there.

You were a family treasure and will be missed.

Margaret was a great friend of both mine and my family. My dad, Roger Dean, was the pastor at John Knox Presbyterian Church and Margaret was a dear friend of our family. She was always there for my mom who loved her dearly, and she was a friend to me giving me a painting job one summer in early 80's when I was in college and needed the summer work. She also, gave me a $1500 loan when I graduated college in '83 and took me a while but got her paid back. I know she taught thousands of kids...
