MARGO GOLDEN Obituary

GOLDEN, Margo Margo Lyn Golden (Simon) died peacefully at home in the arms of her loving husband on January 21, 2021, after living with cancer for 24 years. She is survived by her adoring husband, Neil Golden, and her devoted children, Andrew Golden and his wife Kate Billman-Golemme, and Craig Golden. She was cherished Nanny to her grandson, Ellis. Also survived by her adoring brothers, Donald Simon and his wife Susana de la Torre, and Gary Simon, Michael and Susan Golden, and David and Beth Golden, and nieces and nephews, Elena and Eli Simon, Eric Golden, Sara Pell, Leah Kolodny, and Alena and Julia Golden. Daughter of the late Edward and Susan Simon and Samuel and Mildred Golden. Margo grew up in Andover, MA. She attained an undergraduate degree from Simmons College and a Master's of Public Health from Boston University. She worked in the field of public health for many years, including the Women, Infants & Children program at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, the Watertown Health Center, as a published author on a study of the flu vaccine in Essex County, and a program director at both Beth Israel and Deaconess Hospitals. Margo's life was always dedicated to public service, beginning with serving as a volunteer for Oxfam America during high school. She later served on the Board of Directors of Women's Community Cancer Project, and was honored by having her picture incorporated into a mural on Church Street in Cambridge. She also served on the Board of Directors of Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow. Most important to her, she served as President of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition for over 10 years, an organization dedicated to cancer and the environment. Margo testified many times at the Boston City Council, and at hearings before both the Massachusetts House of Representatives and State Senate. For this, she was cited by the Mayor of the City of Boston, the House of Representatives and State Senate. She was one of a hundred people honored by Massachusetts General Hospital for leading the fight against cancer. There was not a person who ever met Margo who was not touched by her lovingkindness and care. There will never be anyone else like her. Today marks the five-year anniversary of the passing of my sister Margo.
I miss Margo terribly and think of her daily. I could not have had a more loving, charming, giving and generous person as a sister.
I love you Margo immeasurably.

Sometimes working on a family geneology you find sad news. I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to meet Margo - I remember her parents. Donnie, if you're still in NoVa this is your cousin Renee from Reston. It's been about 30 years- please get in touch.

The six of us have had only each other as first cousins. Margo, of course, has always been the shining star. We are all related via two sisters - Sue Simon and Ellen Knopf. No matter how much time passes, there is no filling the void that Margo has left. I love you so much Margo.

Margo loved her family so much and we were indeterminably blessed to have her in our lives. And regardless of the toll that this abominable disease constantly placed on her, Margo tirelessly troubled herself with the welfare and concerns of her family. I love you and miss you so much, Margo.

Margo had such a special relationship with our Mom. Aside from calling each other every day, they shared wonderful experiences traveling together - such as their trip to Germany and seeing the street and neighborhood in Duisburg-Hamborn where our Mom spent her formative years. That adventure with Margo to Germany was such a great memory for our Mom. Thank-you Margo for being so giving always. I love you so much.

Don,
I am so so sorry to hear about Margo´s passing. She left us far too soon. We exchanged a couple emails over the years, and had hoped she wasn´t suffering in the past couple years. Growing up with Margo, she was kind, friendly, and supportive. She was clearly accomplished in her career and passion projects, and didn´t let cancer hold her back. She was goodness through and through.

Warmly,
Karyl
