Deeply saddened and with broken hearts, the family of Mary L. Leyva, age 92, announce her unexpected passing resulting from a stroke on Mother's Day. On Thursday, May 22, 2014, she died peacefully and with dignity, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born in Cosala, Sinaloa, Mexico on Dec. 13, 1921. She entered the United States on June 18, 1945 and was especially proud when she became a naturalized citizen on Aug. 31, 1995. Mary was a devout Catholic and praying her rosary brought her great comfort.
After raising 4 children, Mary accepted a position as a Tester Optical at Xerox Corp/Loral Electro-Optical Sys. where she worked for 17 yrs. Upon retiring on May 1, 1987, she continued to do many of the things which brought her great joy, such as: being the Dodgers' #1 fan, gardening, traveling, board games (especially Scrabble and Rummikub), word-search puzzles, and spending time with her family. Even in her later years she never missed a family function because she enjoyed them so much. Her youthful spirit enabled her to play volleyball up until the age of 80. She also enjoyed participating in a good water balloon fight!
Mary is survived by a daughter, Christina Leyva of Rancho Cucamonga; 3 sons: George (Lynda) of Rancho Cucamonga; Richard (Bobbie) of Auburn; Victor (Linda) of Calimesa; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving her is a sister Maria De Los Angeles Sanchez and 2 brothers: Romulo & Gontran Rodriguez, as well as a large number of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014, from 5-7 pm, with the Rosary from 7-8 pm at Stone Funeral Home, 355 E. 9th St., Upland, CA 91786. On Saturday, May 31, 2014, at 9:30 am, a funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church, 877 N. Campus Ave., Upland, CA 91768, with internment immediately following at Bellevue Cemetery, 1240 W. G St., Ontario, CA 91762.
