Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

Following a lengthy decline, Maria del Carmen (Carmen) Martinez transitioned to her Lord on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at the age of 95. She was born in San Antonio, March 7, 1930, to Modesto and Ernestina Garcia.   She graduated from St. Agnes elementary school and Ursuline Academy. The next phase of life was as a devoted wife and proud mother.  Carmen subsequently retired from the Archdiocese as a receptionist for San Fernando Cemetery serving over 27 years and assisted thousands of families in their time of need.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: brother, Alfonso Bartholomew; sisters Marina Seaman, Ernestine Garcia, and Teresa Muniz.  Carmen is survived by her children:  Richard Martinez (wife Beatrice), Loretta Porter (husband David) and George Martinez (wife Pam): grandchildren Christian Martinez, Julia Morris and Sonia Sharples (husband John) as well as four great grandchildren; Reyna and Navy Morris and Natalie and Gavin Sharples.

Carmen enjoyed time spent with family and friends, especially her children and grandchildren. Christmas was always her favorite time of the year. Her children have many fond memories of holidays spent together especially Christmas, where she decorated with an aluminum tree & later collected many beautiful tree ornaments.  She got much pleasure seeing the look on their faces as they opened their presents.

We are especially grateful for the loving care extended by the staff of St. Francis Nursing Home.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Carmen’s name to St. Francis Nursing Home, 630 W. Woodlawn, San Antonio, TX 78212.

Not sure what to say?

Carmen was my special cousin. We shared many special memories together growing up. She was not only my cousin but a great friend. I missed her when we could no longer communicate with one another. I will always remember our love for one another. I am thankful that she is now resting in peace and want to express condolences to her family, Rick, Loretta, and George, and
their families from me and my daughters, Susan and Patrice. We all loved her.

Carmen it hurts my heart to say goodbye. Our Father Alfred Ochoa, your cousin, loved you like a sister. You were so kind to reach out to me when our Mother Marge was ill. You had a heart of gold. For the family I named my daughter in 1969 after your childhood street home, Lisa Rae. Forever in my thoughts and prayers. We loved you Carmen. Rest in our Lords arms.

My sympathies to the family.
