Maria Martins Obituary
November 9, 1944 - August 8, 2017
Maria Correia Martins, age 72, passed away August 8th after a brief illness. She was born in Ribeira Seca, St. Jorge, Azores to Maria and Adao Correia. In February of 1966 Maria left Portugal with her family and moved to Angola where her father started a small dairy farm.
It was in Angola that she met her husband Antonio. They were married for 47 years before his passing in 2014. In 1975 they returned to Portugal and had their first child, son Paul. In 1979 they moved to America to pursue a better life for their family. In 1981 they welcomed their daughter, Natalia.
Maria enjoyed attending festas, especially as a proud parent when her daughter was a clarinetist with the Tracy Band. She also volunteered with the Our Lady of Fatima Society at St. Frances of Rome in Riverbank. Maria was tremendously thrilled when her older grandchildren joined Luso and began dancing and attended many of their practices. Maria was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed cooking for her family and making sweet bread for her grandchildren. She was always eager to lend a helping hand to her children and watched her grandchildren often.
She is survived by her son Paul and his wife Sarah of Oakdale; daughter Natalia and her husband Jim of Oakdale. She was a devoted Avo to her eight grandchildren: Victor, Adeline, Amelia, Adam, Elena, Clare, Julia, and Caroline. She leaves behind sister Bernadette Antunes of Brazil, and three brothers: Joe Correia of Los Banos, Manuel Correia of Ceres, and Antonio Correia of Portugal. Maria was preceded in death by her parents Maria & Adao Correia, and sister Rosa Verissimo.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 17 from noon to 4 PM at Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Oakdale: 1225 Olive Street, Oakdale, at 7 PM.
Funeral Mass will be 10 AM Friday, August 18 at St. Mary's of Oakdale. Maria will be laid to rest at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery: 1141 Scenic Drive, Modesto.

Dear Natalia.
I am so sorry about the loss of your dear mother. She was such a special lady and I always liked her. She will be missed.
I was sorry to miss the services. We had a family wedding in Southern California and was gone during that time. I will enroll her in a Mass association. I don't have your address, but wil find a way to get the card to you.
All of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Natalie, so sorry for your loss. I'm glad I got to meet your mom when she helped out at FESM. She was a very sweet lady and a hard working lady. May she rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
