Maria Ursula Wubben, beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted wife, passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2024, at the age of 88. Born July 19, 1936, in Mannheim, Germany, Maria grew up with her mother, Helene, and her two older sisters, Anna and Irene. In 1957, at the age of 20, she embarked on a new journey, traveling to Los Angeles with her mother to appear on the show It Could Be You where they were reunited with her older sisters who had immigrated to the United States after the war. Maria began her new life in Torrance where she worked as a candy striper at a hospital and learned English by watching her favorite soap opera, As the World Turns.
Soon after her arrival in the States, it was at an ice cream parlor that Maria met Edward, the love of her life. Their connection was immediate; Edward, smitten by Maria’s beauty and knowing a little German, told her that day that he would marry her. The couple married in 1959 and built a life together filled with love and family. Maria worked for a bank in downtown Los Angeles until the birth of their first child, Ed Jr., in March 1960. In 1961 her second child Steven was born but sadly passed away just three days later. Five years later they welcomed daughter Christina in July 1966. After starting their family, Maria became the bookkeeper for the family business, supporting Edward and nurturing their children. Faith and family were central to Maria’s life. A devout Catholic, she was a cherished parishioner of St. Euphrasia Parish from 1971 until her passing. She had a profound love for animals, especially dogs, and the family home was always filled with the joy of a furry companion. An avid walker and skier, Maria loved exploring the outdoors and could often be found hiking with her dogs or enjoying the slopes of Mammoth Mountain.
Maria was passionate about gardening and creating a beautiful and inviting home. Her love and dedication to her family and friends was unwavering, and she will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and nurturing spirit. Maria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward, with whom she shared 45 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2004. She is survived by her children, Ed Jr. and Christina, along with her granddaughter, Ashley.
Maria will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
