Today, as I celebrate my retirement after almost 40 years of teaching, I am especially grateful to Mme Hoog. She encouraged me to prepare for the academic career that has brought me so much satisfaction. She has been my role-model to me in many ways. I will always treasure her memory.

I met Mme Hoog in Tours, France, for a most memorable George Sand conference. She was a delightful and lively woman. I so remember how close she was to her daughter, Isabelle, how very happy they seemed in each other's presence. Such a gift to have such a mother and such a loss. You have my sincere condolences, Isabelle.

She became my favorite professor and I took every course I could that she taught. I will always love her and be thankful for having had the chance to know...

Mme Hoog was more than a beloved French professor. She was a source of encouragement, a mentor, an inspiration. May her memory be for a blessing.
