Chambers Funeral Homes - Cleveland Obituary

MARILYN THERESE MAURER HEHNEN, affectionately known as “Mary” by her friends and family, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 26th, 2025, at her home in Cleveland, Ohio. She was born March 30th, 1947, to the late Willard and Adele Maurer (Mahon). Mary was a graduate of Magnificat High School (1965) and graduated from Ursuline College (1969), with a bachelor’s degree in education. Following college, Mary worked as a teleservice representative for Social Security and became a loving caregiver to her younger ill sister, Rita. Later in life, she also served as a caregiver to her father Willard. She was a devoted wife and mother, as well as a fantastic grandmother to her grandsons. She loved making them French onion soup, sewing their Halloween costumes, and then taking them Trick-or-Treating. In the summer, Mary’s grandsons Josh and Matthew loved staying with her and Jim, swimming in the backyard pool, going fishing, and then going out to Malley’s for ice cream. She also traveled to Columbus and other locations often to cheer on her grandson’s soccer and water polo games. She taught her grandsons and great-nieces how to make crepes and gifted them recipe books she had made herself.

Mary and her husband Jim enjoyed several vacations with their children frequenting Hilton Head Island with Mary, Scott, Josh and Matthew. She soared through the Florida skies on a tandem hang glider during one of the vacations with her beloved son James Jr and her husband Jim.

Mary lived her faith and was an active lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Angels; she cleaned the church every Friday as a handmaid. Additionally, Mary served as President of the Outreach Program, where she and Jim delivered annual Thanksgiving meals and took food to those in need throughout the rest of the year. She and Jim hosted large family holiday dinners and gatherings.

Mary and Jim had season tickets to the Cleveland Indians, going to both training camps and games. They frequently attended plays at Playhouse Square with a special group of friends, the “Supper Club” and “Couples Club”, with whom they also enjoyed traveling and gathering for July 4th cookouts and clambakes. Mary also loved playing Scrabble with her family and daily with her loving husband Jim.

She loved her husband and family deeply and will be truly missed. Her husband Jim was truly her soulmate, and she loved him with intense devotion. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister Rita Maurer. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 57 years, James M. Hehnen Sr; her daughter, Mary Margaret Hehnen (Scott) Kravitz, and son, James M. Hehnen Jr; her grandsons, Josh and Matthew Kravitz; her nephews, Joe, Ken, and John Hehnen; her cousin Richard Curran, her great nieces, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 1st, at Our Lady of Angels Church (3644 Rocky River Dr., Cleveland, OH 44111) at 11:00 A.M.  Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.  Friends may call at CHAMBERS FUNERAL HOME of CLEVELAND, 4420 ROCKY RIVER DR. AT PURITAS, THURSDAY, JULY 31st, from 4:00-7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Our Lady of Angels Church Outreach Program.

Not sure what to say?

To Jim and family,
Denny and I are very sorry for your loss. May your wife, mother, grandmother rest in eternal peace. Praying for God to comfort you and give you strength during these days and all the days to come ❤

Dear James Matthew, and family. My deepest sympathy at the loss of your beloved Marilyn. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of great sadness. I remember the first time I met Mary, it was at grandma Lavelle's house on Rocky River Dr, and I remember how kind she was then, I also remember how kind you both were to Margaret, Dennis, and I when John, and Jim passed. Again you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace in Paradise Mary

Dear Jim and family, I was really shocked when you called to let us know of Mary's passing. To me she was always my "little sister" not a cousin. Sure, at times when were kids I used to "pick on her", but she held her own against me. I will always remember that little red-haired cherub that stayed with my mom & dad for several summers. We will have a mass ordered thru our parish, Holy Trinity in you loving/caring memory! We will always be thinking of you, Rita, you Mom & Dad. Love, Dick...

I always enjoyed spending time with Mary. She was such a kind, thoughtful person. She will be greatly missed.
