Graciela Kavulla, retired Principal; In the mid 90's as Principal of a middle school in Pasadena, Mr. Gallegos graciously & generously came to Jackson Intermediate to speak to our mostly Hispanic inner city students. He was full of inspiration, kindness, & understanding of the students diffiicult situations. It has been my impression as I followed his career he was not looking for headlines, or accalodes. He simply cared deeply about his people. It is my deep belief he is in heaven...

All Texans will mourn the loss of a true friend of the children who attend public schools of Texas. Mario was a brave firefighter who, after retirement, fought the enemies of public education with he same type of valor he fought fires with.

I had the pleasure of working for Senator Mario Gallegos during the 2007 Legislative Session. It was that year that he was given his liver transplant. Throughout the time that I worked for him he showed so much strength and perseverance-coming into the capital to stand up for what he believed in regardless of the risks to his health.
