Marion Rast "Tunky" Campbell

Marion Rast "Tunky" Campbell, Sr., 85, of Columbia died Saturday, January 10, 2015. Born January 26, 1929, in Varnville, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Dr. John C. and Mrs. Ruth R. Campbell. A graduate of Varnville High School, Tunky attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Biology (1949) and Civil Engineering (1955). While at Carolina he served as the Commander of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and was an instructor in the School of Engineering. In addition, Tunky served as an officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Additional affiliations include the Rotary Club of Cayce-West Columbia, The American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Water Works Association, and the Water and Pollution Control Association. He was a past President of the Columbia Chapter of the SC Society of Professional Engineers, and a past President of the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Columbia. Tunky was a member of Forest Lake Club and The Camellia Ball. He worked in the testing laboratory of the S.C. Highway Department and was one of the founders of Pioneer Steel Company and President of Pioneer Fence Company and an owner of Bradshaw Manufacturing Company. Tunky also sold commercial real estate with Toma, Inc. and engineering services with several firms. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Martha Savage Campbell formerly of Camden, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Marion R. Campbell, Jr. and Kassie Haynes Campbell of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Alexander S. Campbell and Nancy A. Campbell of Anderson, and daughter Catherine S. Campbell of Columbia. Tunky adored his five grandchildren: Marion R. "Rion" Campbell, III of Columbia and Lt. Alexander S. "Zan" Campbell, Jr. (USN) of Jacksonville, Fla., Margaret L. "Meg" Campbell, C. McBryde Campbell, and Ian E. Campbell all of Anderson. In addition, he is survived by his brother John N. Campbell of Cayce, S.C. and his extended family.
The memorial service for Mr. Campbell will be held 3 o'clock, Tuesday, January 13, at The First Presbyterian Church of Columbia with Rev. David H. Lauten, Rev. L. Craig Wilkes and Rev. Alexander S. Campbell officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in Jackson Hall. Private burial will precede the service. Members of the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Columbia are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers.
