Marion Greenberg Obituary

Greenberg, Marion Yvonne SAN DIEGO -- Marion Yvonne Greenberg, a San Diego County resident for almost 44 years, passed away on February 11, 2014 at Emeritus, Carmel Valley. Born to Paul and Friedel Blumenthal (Haimann) in Mexico City on August 20, 1931, she graduated from the American School in San Antonio, Texas in 1948. Fluent in Spanish and English, she graduated from The University of Nebraska at Omaha with a B.S. in Education (1970) and earned an M.S. in Spanish from San Diego State University (1976). Most of her teaching career was spent at Poway High School (1973-1996), where she taught primarily English, Spanish, Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Language, and AP Spanish Literature. She was very proud of being a table reader for the AP Spanish Language and Literature exams and gave seminars to other AP Spanish teachers for many years. She also taught Spanish at UCSD Extension. To indulge her passion for writing, she worked for a total of three years, starting at age 18, for a major hotel in Mexico in the P.R. Department writing articles that often included face-to-face interviews with Mexican and American celebrities, none more famous than Cary Grant. She also wrote for the San Diego Jewish Times (1982- 2006) and sdjewishworld (2007-2012), a website run by Don Harrison, a former reporter for the San Diego Union, focusing on the annual San Diego Jewish Film and Arts Festivals, as well as the San Diego Jewish Book Fair. She loved to read, especially "Time Magazine," was an avid water skier, and tennis player (although, by her own admission, she was no more than a C-player with one shot, the lob). She also enjoyed walking on the treadmill and swimming at the La Jolla JCC. She was preceded in death by husbands, Walter Greenberg and Harold Dickstein, with whom she had some of the most fun and rewarding times of her life. She was also preceded in death by her son, Brant Greenberg; and sister, Suzy Rubin. She is survived by a son, Paul Greenberg; and nieces, Sydney Rubin (Andy) Lewis, and Tammy Rubin Abramowitz. She is also survived by stepchildren, Paul (Eva) Dickstein and Dawn Dickstein; and step-grandchildren, Shayna and Rachel Dickstein. A burial with graveside service will take place at 11 a.m., on February 18, at El Camino (Sorrento Valley). A memorial service at Congregation Beth Israel is pending. She will sadly but affectionately be missed by so many.
