Marion Harvey Smith, 60, husband of Ann Molony Smith, entered into eternal rest on January 22, 2015 following a courageous five year battle against cancer. He was the son of Vernon and Gwendolyn Smith.
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Harvey Smith are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Sunday, January 25, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. A Vigil Services will begin at 6:00 PM.
Marion was born in Charleston on January 29, 1954. He graduated from James Island High School in 1972 and graduated from the College of Charleston in 1976. He retired from Procter and Gamble.
Marion and Ann raised four daughters. He loved his girls dearly, but his granddaughter, Melissa Ann Gehlken, filled his heart with forever love with her smiles, hugs, giggles, and precious moments rocking with her Papa in his recliner while he told her, ?that?s my girl.?
He was a founding and active member of the Tikis, a board member of the No Name Golf Club, and an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was an enthusiastic Gamecock fan and loved that his three youngest daughters graduated from the University of South Carolina. He loved spending time in the boat with his family and friends. During his five year battle, he gained a second family at Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates. Dr. Ellison, Mary, his nurses, and the staff always went above and beyond and he grew to love them.
Marion was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Melissa Ann and his father, Vernon Smith, Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Ann Molony Smith; his daughters Lauren Smith (Trey) Gehlken, Caroline Smith (Steve) Richards, and Natalie Christine Smith; his granddaughter, Melissa Ann Gehlken; his beloved mother, Gwendolyn Harvey Smith; his brothers Vernon (Kathy) Smith and Rev. Michael Wayne (Eleanor) Smith, Sr.
Memorials may be made to Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates, 843-577-6957, 2085 Henry Tecklenburg, 2nd Floor, Charleston, SC 29414 or to St. Joseph Catholic Church Capital Improvement Fund, 1695 Wallenberg Blvd, Charleston, SC 29407.

I worked with Marion several years ago. Often times in our profession your paths cross and then you move on. Not with Marion, despite a nearly 20 year age difference we connected as friends. I will look back fondly on our conversations and appreciate his friendship. He was a great person who loved his family and friends dearly. I will miss him very much as I know many others will. God bless.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I never had the opportunity to meet Marion but I was very blessed that his brother Mike sought me out at my grandmother's (Vonnie Planton) funeral. My mother told me many stories of the 3 boys hanging out with the "Planton crew" with my Uncle Rick having a close relationship with Marion.
I am sending my deepest condolences to your entire family from my mother in heaven, Jan Planton O'Neal, and my family.
