Not sure what to say?

From a fellow Byzantinist, heartfelt condolences.

I had taken 2 undergraduate courses with Dr Philippides at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst 44 years ago. At that time I was planning on veterinary school at Aristotle University. On several occasions Dr Philippides offered advice on education, culture and daily life in Greece. Dr Philippides was an excellent teacher, kind person and respected by his students. Marios and I made a firm connection from the first time we met, because of our studies with the same teachers in SUNY Buffalo. It was always a delight to meet him at conferences around the US; he was a gifted conversationalist and had a great sense of humour. May he rest in peace. Sincere condolences to his family for the loss of a great human being who left this life too soon.

Mario was a cherished friend, mentor and colleague whose scholarship and contributions to Byzantine history will always be valued. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and was kind and generous with his vast knowledge. I will always miss him. Aionia e mneme.. Constantine Hatzidimitriou

Marios was our beloved neighbor. We met while he was walking his sweet dog, Lucy. We always left our conversations smiling at his humor, amazed at his abilities and warmed by his kindness. We are so saddened to lose him Our hearts go out to his wife,Corinne. Charlie McCracken and Ann Richardson

Marios was a dear mentor of mine when I was earning my teaching degree at UMass Amherst. I learned much about Greek Civilization and Myth from him. I picked up several good teaching habits from him. He and I bonded over a shared love of Byzantine history, and he gave me several of his books on the subject to enjoy. I greatly admired his generosity, honesty, and intellect.

Prof. Philippides was also a a talented musician on piano and harpsichord. .
