NEW LONDON -- Marjorie Ross Barton, 77, of New London and The Villages, Fla., died April 7, 2009, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

She was born in Boston on Oct. 31, 1931, the daughter of Edward Gerard Anthony and Margaret Eileen (Rush) Powers II.

She earned a bachelor's degree in library science from Bridgewater State College. Mrs. Barton worked for theNorwell School System as a school librarian and then for the Scituate Town Library.

She lived in Hanover, Mass., for many years before moving to New London in 1986.

She wintered in Florida for the past 20 years. She was a member of the New London Hospital Auxiliary, the New London Historical Society, the Lake Sunapee Country Club and the New London Garden Club. She volunteered for Kearsarge Area Council on Aging.

She and her husband were founding members of the New London Bocce Club.

IN HER LIFE: She loved to play bridge and was in bridge groups in New London and Florida. Her other hobbies include reading, golf, tennis and skiing.

She enjoyed traveling and visited many places around the world. Her grandchildren were a joy to her and she loved having them around.

Her first husband, Henry A. Ross, died in 1984.

The family includes her husband, Carlton F. Barton of New London and The Villages; two daughters, Jerilynn Leahy of North Attleboro, Mass., and Pamela (David) Pinkham of Mont Vernon; four sons, Thomas Barton of Wolfeboro, William (Barbara) Barton of Tuftonboro, Benjamin (Deborah) Barton of New London and Daniel (Alison) Barton of Boxford, Mass.; 19 grandchildren, Ross Downing, Nicole Pinkham, Jay Downing, Gretchen Pinkham, Elizabeth, Susan, Frawley, Peter, Libby, Jenna, Emily, Sam, Katie, Nate, Jillian, Jason, Alex, Christopher and Hillary Barton; a sister-in-law, Louise Powers of West Roxbury, Mass.; a cousin, Patricia Spaulding of Sharon, Mass., and The Villages, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: A funeral service is at 1 p.m. Saturday in The First Baptist Church of New London.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New London Hospital, 273 County Road, New London 03257. Chadwick Funeral Service of New London is assisting the family with arrangements.
