Mrs. Marjorie S. Shultz, 91 , widow of Seymour G. Shultz a resident of Crescent Blvd. in Bennington died December 31, 2008 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation surrounded by her loving family.

Marjorie brightened the world on March 3, 1917. She was born in Hudson, NY. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Lillian (Northam) Starkes. She attended the Claverack schools and graduated from Hudson High School in 1934. Her education continued in New York City and her first employment was with Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn in Riverdale, NY who at the time was treating the famous Lou Gehrig. War drums were beating and her English background led her to her next employment at the British Purchasing Commission on Wall Street. Not long after, our own country was at war and she moved to Hartford, CT and was a secretary at the Induction Station. After more studies she became a Production Engineer at the Hartford Special Machinery Company who at the time were making parts for our war planes.

In January of 1947 she was married to Seymour G. Shultz in Farmington, CT. After a southern honeymoon they made their home in Bennington.

In earlier years Mrs. Shultz was active with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. She worked with her husband establishing the Shultz Jewelry business on Crescent Blvd. Never at a loss for something to do she was an avid craftswoman and handy at rug hooking, knitting, lamp shading and landscape oil painting. Known as the “Mitten Lady” she has knitted over 800 pairs of mittens for the Warm the Children Program. Until her health failed she enjoyed a round of golf, playing cribbage and for many years was a faithful follower of the Boston Red Sox. Marge’s greatest joy was her family, her beautiful gardens and bringing joy and humor to her many friends and neighbors.

Survivors include a son, Dan S. Shultz and his wife Linda of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Jean S. Hoyt and her husband David of Shaftsbury, VT; four grandchildren, Joshua A. Shultz of Chicago, Illinois, Austin D. Hoyt of Thornwood, New York, Ryan T. Shultz of Alexandria, Virginia and Whitney N. Hoyt of Burlington, VT; a sister, Lillian S. Clark of Hudson, NY; a brother Frank W. Starkes and his wife Jean of Claverack, NY. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Shultz was pre deceased by two brothers and sister, John W and James A.
