A group of Rick's friends of varying size and stature were often gathered in the Slanker's basement game domain to bring a raucous nature to the otherwise peaceful home of the "Good Don" and Mrs. S. Despite our unworthy ways, she always treated us with such kindness and respect despite our rambunctious and disruptive ways. My high school years in New Carlisle were peppered with many joyous and jocular times with Rick at the Slanker household, made most welcome and enduring by the gracious efforts of Mrs. Slanker. We never heard a cross or admonishing word from her, even when we deserved a few! Her stable, confident demeanor and patient guidance by example were a calming presence whenever she was present. I am privileged to have known her for those few, memorable years.
