In 1972, she was chosen Citizen of the Year by the Crewe-Burkeville Lions Club, and in her acceptance speech, she said she loved the people of this town and whenever she was with a great many people, she felt inspired and thought of the lines in a beautiful song that says, "I Love The Dear Hearts and Gentle People In My Hometown." She worked for many years at Crewe Primary School, where she always tried to teach the children how to read and speak better.
