SLAW, Marjorie Ellett, 89, passed away February 17, 2011 at Hickory Hill Retirement Community, where she had resided for the past 10 years and considered it her second home. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Steve Slaw Sr.; and her oldest son, David Steve Slaw Jr. "Punky." She is survived by her daughters, Joan S. Durvin and husband, Ray, Susan S. Redford and husband, Jeff, all of Richmond; and a son, Donald A. Slaw Sr.; her devoted daughter-in-law, Janet Slaw of Crewe; eight grandsons, two granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Margaret Williams of Kenbridge, Mary Elizabeth Slaw and Evelyn Wooten and husband, O.G., of Blackstone; her cousins, Bill Ross and wife, Betty, Gene Ross and wife, Sue, Ann White and husband, Bill; and lifelong friend, Anne Hawkes of Nashville, Tenn. Margie joined Crewe Baptist Church at the age of 11. She led the Sunbeams, GAs, Bible School and various church activities, and was active in the WMU and taught the TEL Sunday School class for many years. She told the story of the missionary Lottie Moon so well that her pastor laughed and said he thought they grew up and played together. She was a kind and generous Christian woman who loved and was devoted to her church, God, her family, friends and helped many families in need. In 1972, she was chosen Citizen of the Year by the Crewe-Burkeville Lions Club, and in her acceptance speech, she said she loved the people of this town and whenever she was with a great many people, she felt inspired and thought of the lines in a beautiful song that says, "I Love The Dear Hearts and Gentle People In My Hometown." On August 21, 1999, she and her husband, Steve, were the Grand Marshalls of the Crewe Homecoming Parade. She worked for many years at Crewe Primary School, where she always tried to teach the children how to read and speak better. She had such a good time with children that she continued to volunteer after she retired. Visitation will be on Saturday evening, from 6 to 8, at the Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, 200 West Carolina Ave., Crewe, Va. Services will be held at the Crewe Baptist Church on Sunday, February 20, 2 p.m. Burial in the Crewe Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crewe Baptist Church WMU. Arrangements are in the care of Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home.

Not sure what to say?

I'll always remember her visits as I grew up. We would play cards and all sorts of games. God truly bless us with the gift of Marjorie, my grandmother. Love Johnny, you're grandson.

I only knew Margie for a short time but she touch my heart and soul. She was an ANGEL on earth. I will truly miss her.

D.J. - Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you. Granny will be loved and missed by all who knew her.

Donnie and DJ and family. So sorry about Mrs. Slaws passing. She is in a better place. Know you will always love and miss her, but I promise it will get better.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said,...

Granny I Love and Miss You So Very Much!!! When My Chores Here Are Done Open Up The Gates For Me... Spread You Angel Wings and Fly! I Think About You Everyday, I Love You!!!

Bobbie and I are sorry that we can't be with you this weekend. Your mother made us feel special whenever we visited. When we received her notes she always had wonderful rememberances of our parents to share. She seemed a part of our family. too!

On behalf of my brothers Donald Kent who was a playmate of Punky and Jeff, we send our heartfelt condolences to the Slaw family. We share many fond memories of our hometown Crewe whose friends and neighbors were/are the best in the world. (Our parents Raymond and Lizzie Gary Davis owned and published The Crewe Chronicle.)

Joanie, Donnie, and Susie,
Your mom was a wonderful person. She made this world a better place. I have many fond memories of her example as a person who lived life to the fullest. Please know that you are in the prayers of the Ross family. Margie was a great friend to my mom.
