In the Heart of It All
From his days in high school in Vienna, Va., Mark Ryan McGinly had eyes only for New York City. He told anyone who would listen that one day, he was going to live and play in Manhattan. And Mr. McGinly, a 26-year- old trader for Carr Futures, wound up living in the heart of the city, on the Upper West Side in a little apartment on 68th Street, near Columbus Avenue. It was the life he dreamed of - no need for a car, a party on every corner and a job with overnight hours that came with one irresistible perk: He could work and watch the 11 p.m. edition of SportsCenter without interruption.

"I'd call him every Monday morning to make sure he made it through the weekend," said Mr. McGinly's best friend from high school, Brian Cramp. "He loved that he was in a city where he could be out until four or five in the morning doing whatever. The only thing he didn't like was Times Square."

At a recent memorial service planned for 500 relatives and friends, 1,500 people from around the world came to celebrate Mr. McGinly's life and say goodbye. It's something his family and Mr. Cramp are still waiting to do. "There is no closure yet," Mr. Cramp said. "He was on the 92nd floor, where the plane hit directly. It would help if they could somehow find his body. But I think we'd be happy just knowing that he didn't suffer, that when the plane hit it took him out in a matter of seconds."

I have been watching parts of the dedication ceremony for the 9/11 Museum today, and remembering Mark. I only met him a couple of times: he went to Madison High School with my daughter Andrea. He was, as so many of the other entries make clear, a kind and generous young man, full of life. In remembering him, we honor that life while grieving his death.

RIP

i know one of his cousins and every 9/11 i see him telling everyone on how great he was he will be in my prayers forever.

Mark graduated from Madison High School with my daughter. He will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN God called him home early, but we will never understand why. Our family remembers Mark each year on 9/11. God Bess America.
