Mark J. O’Connor, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, August 18, 2022 in Baystate Medical Center after battling cancer for many months.  Born in Davenport, Iowa, son of the late Dr. James T. and Nance (Grandchamp) O’Connor, he was a lifelong resident of West Springfield and a 1975 graduate of West Springfield High School.  He also attended Westfield State University.  Mark worked as a Senior Underwriter for IBU, Inc. based in Hartford for the last eight years. Previously he worked for twenty-three years for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.  He was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying racquetball, golf and baseball to name a few. Mark formerly coached many of his daughter's youth soccer, softball and basketball teams in West Springfield, and was a longtime member of the Dante Club and Safari Golf Club.  He leaves his wife of thirty-six years, Kathleen (Kennedy) O’Connor, and his daughter, Shannon E. O’Connor of West Springfield. He also leaves his sister, Susan M. (Theodore “TJ” Wojnar) of Dallas, TX and four brothers, Dennis E. (Deborah) O’Connor of Marblehead, MA, James M. (Lynne) O’Connor of Cape Elizabeth, ME, David M. (Karen) O’Connor of Southwick, MA, Michael S. (June) O’Connor of East Lyme, CT, his aunt Jean Healy of Southampton, MA, several nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog, Rory. He was a friend of everyone he met and so loved by all of his friends and family, always putting the needs of others before his own. He was the most kind, generous and helpful husband, father, brother and friend, always willing to be there for others when needed. Not sure what to say?

To all family and friends of Mark I am sorry to hear of Mark's passing. I played baseball for West Side '73 -'77 and remember Mark as a fine baseball player. I specifically remember he was very fast and an outstanding left fielder. I put together this small montage of Mark from the '74 and '75 Yearbooks. Stealing second against Westfield in '75, Senior Yearbook photo, Junior Yearbook photo and the Varsity Baseball Team of 1975. I hope it brings a smile during this difficult time. My thoughts...

To all of the family and friends of Mark, I am so very sorry for your loss. This comes as a complete shock to me. I last bumped into Mark and his wife Kathy oddly enough at the WS town dump, I think on a Sunday just a couple of months ago. Yes, the dump is closed on Sunday, we both had the same idea to dispose of a little yard waste “after hours”. Haven’t seen Mark in many years, I barely recognized him and shockingly he didn’t recognize me. We had a great 10 min chat while Kathy waited...

Kathleen and Shannon I am so sorry to learn just now of Mark´s passing! Mark guided me when I first went to work for Mass Mutual back in 1995. He was kind, funny, and a good friend. He introduced me to you at a craft fair once ages ago. I hope your happy memories will help soothe your grieving hearts. Marilyn Konefal

Kathy,Shannon and O’Connor familyI am deeply saddened by Mark’s passing - having been able to re-connect with Mark the last few years was the best - he always made me laugh, which is a gift unto itselfI am sorry for your lossI will miss him!

Dear Kathy and Shannon, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your husband and dad...I always enjoyed your family visits to my office and can't forget the comic relief Mark brought to each visit...many times, I am sure, to allay your motherly concerns for Shannon's international adventures...may your rich memories and abiding love bring you comfort...my deepest sympathies for this profound loss.

My deepest sympathies for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I met Mark when we worked together at MassMutual. He was kind, generous and always smiling. He touched so many lives in a positive way. I know I am a better person for having known him.

Thank you for our early morning car rides to the doggie park. We certainly had many an interesting conversation. Thank you also for stopping at Dunkin so I could get a great snack for the ride home. Your numerous trips to kennels and the vet showed that you cared so much for me. Your skill in finding me after numerous escapes from the house was deeply appreciated! RIP my buddy, Snoop

Heartfelt sympathy and prayers to you Kathy and Shannon and to all our O'Connor cousins from the Driscoll family. May you be comforted by all the happy memories and good times you shared. Love , Ann and family
