Canale Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Marquette Obituary

Mark Andrew “ Marcus” Pennell died peacefully of apparent heart failure in his home. He was 53. Mark was born June 8, 1964 to Arthur and Phyllis Pennell, the youngest of five children. He graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1982 and moved to Florence, Wisconsin. He received an Associate Degree in Radiography from Lakeshore Technical College in 2005 and was employed for a number of years at Dickinson Memorial Hospital as an x-ray technician. He recently returned to the Marquette area where he worked at Econo Foods as a baker. Marcus liked to laugh and make people laugh and had a bright, infectious smile. He inherited his father’s passion for words and his mother’s ability to see the best in everyone. Mark was at home in and on the water, enjoyed traveling and had seen and appreciated much of what the world had to offer, but was just as happy to be on the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. His loved music and his taste was exceptional and broad. He was an avid golfer and liked all sports, but hockey was his favorite and he was a lifelong Chicago Blackhawks fan. Mark is survived by his two children, Jamie Lee Pennell of North Carolina and Nicolas Arthur Pennell of Michigan; four siblings, Debbie (Rob) Ross, Leslie (Doug Danforth) Jackson, Tracy (Emmanuel) Feliz, Jim (Barbara Knox) Pennell and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Pennell and his father, Arthur Pennell. A service celebrating Mark’s life will be held Saturday, September 2nd at 2 pm at the cottage where he felt most at home, located at 4727 Michibay Road in Manistique, Michigan. All who had their lives touched by Mark are invited and those that are unable to attend are encouraged to post memories or thoughts of Mark on the Canale - Tonella Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers donations can be directed to Marquette Hope or the Mission Bible Training Camp in Gaastra, Mi.

Not sure what to say?

Mark's obituary says it so well. He was a man who made us laugh, he had a quick wit and always engaged us in intelligent conversation. We will deeply miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mark very sad news. Mark and I met in driver's education class and have stayed in touch through the years. We have many good times and memories together. When we would remenese a class trip to Great American would always come up and if you were there what a time it was. Mark would also bring up a time we were out late on a school night and I picked him up in the morning for school and on the corner of Seventh and college I use the...

Seems it wasnt hat many years ago that I was crossing College street to have sleepovers at Marks house or helping search for one of the many dogs (Zar or Nanook I think) Great times and memories with the Pennell family. I'm sure someplace in my boxes of stuff held onto for 40+ years I still have the cassette tapes, of the goofy recordings that we would pull together. My deepest sympathies to his family.

We are keeping you all in our prayers. We look forward to being there with you at camp

Extending to your family this heartfelt assurance of deep sympathy. With our condolences, Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education and Employees

I too remember the fun we had goofing off in the neighborhood. We had many good times at the old Palestra and then Lakeview. He was taken at such a young age. I will pray mostly for his children. No child should be without their father from such a young age.

My deepest sympathies for the Pennell family. Although Mark and I haven't been in touch, I am reminded of him every time I walk past his boyhood home on Front/College. The wonder years. Always having fun, running around and playing in the neighborhood. "Kick the can" on warm summer nights when all us kids were growing up, as the sun went down and the street lights went aglow....groups of us kids down by Memorial Field playing baseball, going to the local parks (when there were activities for...

Tracy and family,
So sorry to hear about your brother. Wish I could be there as you celebrate his life on this earth. The Pennell family has always held a special spot in my heart. You are in my prayers.
Love and hugs, Joanne Hytinen Gibitz
