Dear Maryanne: we never met but like Peter, I too was a fraternity brother of Mark and I just learned of his passing. I am so very sorry for your loss. I last saw Mark shortly before he left for the Marines. I always worried about him during his enlistment as he went in at a very fraught time during that awful, wasteful war. I later learned that he survived those years and was happily back in the USA with you. One thing I wanted to share with you: Mark was the kindest person I had ever met at...

When I learned today from a friend who was also a fraternity brother of ours that Mark had died earlier this month, I took the book...

Mark will be missed, his wit and knowledge of world events
was always interesting, but the thing that brought a smile to his face were his doggies.

Farewell, dear Mark. Thanks for your advice, inspiration and friendship all those years ago. You were a true professional and The Times was lucky to have you for those two decades. Profound condolences to Maryanne, Alphie, Sushi and Max. May you be greeted and hugged by your beloved "children" who crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
