I remember Mark fondly as a good person who was thoroughly likeable, and a good friend. Our lives went in different directions after school, but I have very strong, positive memories of our friendship. I'm sorry to be learning only now of his death, which was all too soon. Richard Kiger

We knew Mark as a man of conviction and fairnes. He always seemed to have this charismatic smile, words of encouragement and an awareness for those less fortunate. This was evident in his outspoken support of equality for all Vermonters, including gays. He truly was Rutland County's oak, its paragon.

I knew Mark at Canterbury. He was the dorm proctor when I was a sophomore. He was a great guy with a lively personality. I remember him getting a crew cut for football season one year. I am very sad to hear of his passing. My deepest sympathies.

Mark-
Say hey to the guys who are with you now, Bobby, C.T. and the rest. We all get there and you were as cool as they come. Rest sweet brother. Chip Berman Canterbury '72

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Mark was a dedicated and caring teacher to my daughter Macy. Thank you for teaching her so much. You are missed by many.

Jane and family,

As I've talked with friends in Rutland this past week, I'm struck by the lasting influence of Mark's energy, passion and commitment, and caring. I hope the enormous loss of his passing is tempered for you by the legacy he's left in this community. I often pick up the burl he gave me when I was designing your gardens and think of his smile and enthusiasm. My thoughts are with you.

Sail on my friend, wait for the rest of us, and warm the fire! You treated those of us who loved you with kindness and smiles of laughter although from afar so very long ago! Thank you for being in my life! You measured up to be one of life's treasures in knowing a true friend! May God protect your blessed children and family through this passage! You left indelible pawprints in the sand as you sailed on and away!

Please accept my deepest condolensces. I got to know Mark when I was a student and he put me to work painting his house in Watch Hill RI. I knew him as a generous and kind man. He certainly made an impression on me that I have never forgotten. Sadly, I was never able to repay his kindness. My thoughts are with you in this sad time.
