Not sure what to say?

A true gentleman that my wife and I met when his wife Ruth was the US Consul General in Milano. We consider him an "old" friend, as the same applies for Ruth. I wish we had known of his departure earlier, we would have tried to reach out to Ruth (unfortunately we no longer have her email)

I just had a thought to look up Marten, and although it is sad to find that he passed it was very nice to revisit his memory. I knew Marten from Green Mountain Hounds from about 2004-2010. Nothing was above or beneath him. He was a complete gentleman and scholar in the truest sense and authentically so. So rare. It was a pleasure and inspiration to know him a little bit and what a gift that such people exist.

Martin was a friend, colleague, mentor and much more. A wise Greek philosopher once wrote that a true measure of our immortality I how those we leave behind remember us. If that is the case Marten will never be forgotten.. There is an old Alsatian proverb that says we never die as long as we live in the hearts of those we leave behind. Requiescat in pace, Gretchen and Jacques Klein

I served with Marten as his Deputy on the National Intelligence Council. I shall always remember him as a dedicated intelligence official and as a good man with an unfailing sense of humor.

I knew Marten from his first day at Hopkins in New Haven. We became close friends and even traveled together one summer in Europe. I followed all that he did in life with admiration and affection. I will miss him terribly. And send you all my deepest sympathies and love. Guido Calabresi

So sad about the loss of Marten, an extraordinary colleague and good friend, Vlad and Pipa Lehovich

Dear Ruth and the VanHeuven family, My deepest sympathies at this sad time. May Marten's memory accompany you and give you strength always. Helen La Lime

To one of my all time heroes and an amazing Uncle. You taught me so much on politics and international affairs but more importantly life in general. You will be sorely missed but leave a legacy we are all proud of. Love you. David van Heuven

Marten was a cherished colleague, mentor and friend. He was a gentleman of the old school whose passing leaves the world a sadder place. He will be sorely missed. Requiescat in pace. Gretchen and Jacques Klein
