Marty, I remember well your contributions to Scripps and give thanks for your life and what you did with it.

I am at a loss for words at this very late acknowledgment of Marty´s passing several years ago. I interacted with her frequently when I was a Berkeley Law student. She was a very warm engaging person who also I had a sense of humor. It was individuals like her who often made law school feel less daunting. I thank her for being who she was...a wonderful and authentic person!

May you rest in peace dearest Marty. You were such an inspiration to all who met you. Thanks for your wisdom, your guidance and your wonderful sense of humor. You will be missed in the legal world! You were my hero.

Marty added intelligence, humor and grace to my family, in addition to sharing her wonderful daughter. I am grateful to her and was privileged to have known her.

Very, very sorry for your loss. It is my hope that the promise of endless life surrounded by those who love God and love family prove to be both comforting and reassuring to you. I hope you continue to cherish the memories as you remember that although Martha is no longer with us, she also no longer has to see or feel the pains of this world, but she is resting until she hears Jesus' voice to come out of the grave and to enter Paradise. (John 5:28-30)

I shall miss the gentle and wise advice Marty gave to Scripps Institution of Oceanography as a Council member. She became a personal friend, much cherished.

Friends and family of Martha Africa, I am very sorry for your loss. I also lost a loved one to cancer and I found that this verse from the bible gave me a little comfort: "He will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces..." I hope that this might bring you some comfort as well.

May the God of all comfort strengthen the entire family during this time of sorrow. Those who die God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15) My sincerest sympathy
