Martha was my mama´s oldest and dearest friend. She (my mama) tells me the story of how Martha "just took her in" on the first day of her new job at Southern Bell. Evidently all the gals back then combed their hair at lunch time before going back to work. My mama had not thought about bringing a comb to work.
