Dear Gin, I was So Touched by the beautiful tribute you paid to your mother at the Memorial Service on Sat. Your words captured the strong relationship that you shared. I am so grateful for your courage and composure that day and also for your many trips to Eureka to visit her over the years. With many fond memories. Love, Pat Thornburgh

The scene: A September 1972 Jacoby Creek school board meeting.
A request was made for board approval of the school's involvement in the county school's environmental education program and specifically my third grade class going to the Wolf Creek outdoor school. The request was denied. Martha was in the audience. She responded, "I am appalled that this board would reject... "The board reconsidered and then approved. So we went and for many years J.C. kids went to Wolf
Creek and...

I worked for Martha at the Humboldt County Office of Education. She was a wonderful role model. Intelligent, passionate, hard working and funny. Later when I worked for Public Health she volunteered on various committees including becoming a founding member of the Humboldt County AIDS Task Force. Our community is better place because of her dedication.

I remember Martha and it doesn't seem so long ago, but time flies. Mad River Hospital, where I have worked for over 40 yrs., has allowed me to meet / work with so many delightful people. I remember meeting Martha and enjoyed chatting with her when we met, usually in the café there. Always a smile, always a cheerful attitude for all. Her gaze was direct and heartwarming. I haven't seen her for a long time but will always remember her cheerful countenance.

I loved working for Martha walking her dog. I will miss her dearly.

I didn't realize Martha had passed until entering the obit column to find another friend. My memories of Martha go first to a long time ago (mid 70's when I first met her while doing an internship in school nursing within the HSU nursing program, as I returned to get my BSN. She was an exemplary school nurse! What I remember most is how tenacious she was in advocating for the children within the school districts, making sure they received the needed services. She was also willing to guest...

I worked with Martha when she was the school system. I loved her spirit and how she fought for "her" kids.

Martha lived a long and useful life. She was, in addition to all the things said about her in the obituary, a member of the group which started the Planned Parenthood in Humboldt county in 1976. In additio she served two terms on the Northern Humboldt School Board at a critical time. A straight shooter, said her mind when needed., She also helped to bring a nurse midwife who delivered al the babies in Camoapa, Nicaragua to Humboldt County to visit all the clinics and hospitals. She wa...
