RIP, Mom. she started playing when she was 3 years old, and I remember that she could in her adult years "play by ear" - she would hear a song on the radio, think for a moment or two, then play the whole song on the piano (transposed for piano).

Mom was the fifth child born to Nellie and Edward Bruhn, right in the middle of the Great Depression. She was very intelligent, she graduated 4th in her class of over 400 at Harding High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. She had a scholarship to attend college, but instead she went to work right after high school as a secretary to support her parents because her father was out of work.
