Martha "Jane" (Carnathan) Reed, 91, of Madison Township, Rimersburg, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Clarion Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Born July 19, 1933, in Pleasant Hill, Madison Township, Clarion County, she was the youngest daughter of Samuel Dale and Ruth Elizabeth (Gourley) Carnathan.

As a young girl in school, Jane delivered True Grit newspapers and provided babysitting services for her older sisters.

After graduating, she worked at Johnny Garneau's curb-service restaurant, The Beanery, in Clarion.

On January 17, 1953, Jane married Donald Eugene Reed at the Jerusalem Evangelical Reformed Church in Rimersburg. He preceded her in death on September 26, 1997.

After starting their family, Jane and her husband lived in various locations, including East Brady and Buffalo, N.Y., following his military service in Oklahoma.

Jane worked briefly for General Electric in Erie. She later took a job at the Owens-Illinois Glass plant in Clarion, where she was employed for more than 25 years. During her time at Owens-Illinois, Jane also owned and operated The Sewing Basket fabric store in Rimersburg with several of her daughters. She took a leave of absence from Owens Illinois to care for her ill mother-in-law and also worked at J&J Fabrics during this period. After retiring from Owens-Illinois, she worked at JoAnn Fabrics.

Jane was a lifelong member of the Jerusalem United Church of Christ in Rimersburg.

In her spare time, Jane enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing and spending time with her family. She looked forward to her weekly get-togethers with friends to eat pizza and play cards.

Survivors include her four daughters, Bobbi (Tim) Gonzales of Orange Beach, Ala., Karen (Tony) Gonzales of Loveland, Colo., Patricia (Steve) Wiencek of Rimersburg and Wendy (Arnie) Wadding of Simpsonville, S.C.; three sons, David (Carol) Reed of Kent, Ohio, Richard Reed of Rimersburg and Daniel (Patty) Reed of Knox; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Della Carnathan; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her five sisters, Betty Walter, Mary Carnahan, Gladys Eddy, Lucille Corle Kifer and Evelyn Hawk Trainer; her two brothers, Leroy "Bubs" and Gary Carnathan; three grandchildren, Angela, Matthew and Miranda; and one great-great-grandchild, Eliana.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at the Clarion Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for their care.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at the Varner Funeral Home in Rimersburg.

Interment will be in the Rimersburg Mausoleum.

Not sure what to say?

My condolences are extended to Dan and his family, Patty and Steve, as well as Dave and Carol. I was delighted to play a small role in helping Mrs. Reed for the brief time that we spent with prepping her supper.
The loss of a parent is quite a stress. May you cherish the fond memories and continue the positive impact she made.

I have know Jane for 48 years. She has been one the most giving persons I have ever met. She gave me one of her daughters who I adore and will never be able to thank her enough for. Her love for her family will never be forgotten. I have been blessed to have such a wonderful Mother-In-Law.

I will much miss my dear cousin and friend. Jane and I had such good times together,
There were a few periods when our lives got too busy for visiting.
But we always made our way back and furthered the relationship.
Especially, in later years, we enjoyed our shopping "trips" to Butler.
That relationship can't be replaced, but
Jane and I will be together, soon, in the presence of our Lord.

It was such a joy to know Martha Jane. She was a blessing to all of us who met together for Bible Study and singing hymns at Clarion Healthcare. From now on I will always think of her when singing How Great Thou Art. .. her favorite hymn. We will truly miss her!
