Not sure what to say?

Mrs. Backer,
I appreciate that I have had at least a few opportunities to meet you and your husband at some of the Spencer family activities. I know he was an outstanding, hard-working man. The obituary was such a nice tribute to a great person! I wanted to bring my mother (Phyllis Spencer) to the funeral but we were unable to be there. We are thinking of you, and wishing the Lord's blessings for you at this time of loss.

My heart goes out to you Phoebe. I hope you are doing O.K. during this hard time.
I met Martin and Phoebe when they were service missionaries in my ward. They would come by and check on me, and always bring wonderful goodies! I've worked in several restaurants in Salt Lake, and served many Backers' cakes, I recognized the label right off the bat. Martin and Phoebe were so humble, and so wonderful.
Phoebe, you and Martin really touched my life with a sparkle. I grew so terribly...

I am so glad to have been associated with Mr. Backer as an employee prior to serving an LDS mission in 1985. My dad, Jack Pitts, worked for Mr. Backer in the 50s. I had the misfortune of being born July 22 and didn't get a Backer's cake on my birthday. Luckily everyone else in the family did. I even had a cake overnighted to me while living in New Jersey! Mr. Backer's legacy reaches through generations and across many, many miles. Thanks to Marty and Renee for hiring me. My thoughts and...

It was a surprise to hear of the passing of Martin. I remember with fondness our association with each other in the Ensign Stake. It was also a pleasure to receive kindness, service and excellent bakery goods whenever we visited your bakery. Our condolences to the family and especially to you, Phoebe. May the Lord's choicest blessings be yours. Owen & Joan Smoot

Death ends a life, not a relationship.

Our memories of Uncle Martin will always be those of a wise and wonderful man ALWAYS filled with great integrity, generosity, compassion and one who spread happiness wherever he went. He and his lovely wife, our Aunt Phoebe, instilled these same qualities in their excellent children.

We feel fortunate to have known him, and he will always live on in our hearts and be an inspiration to try to emulate his many superior qualities.

South Temple for me includes the
amazing Backer Bakery Window....
Christmas, Valentines, Easter and
even the Gone Fishin sign in July.
Every year our birthday would not
be complete without the Backer
Flowers on our cakes. I celebrated
this amazing family and their bak-
ing talent even before I became a
Dunford. Now, knowing what this
man and his family have done for
the baking industry in Utah I

People involved in a specific industry know of a few exemplary individuals that bring pride and honor to their profession. They elevate work to more than just making a living.

Martin was one of these in the Baking Industry. His professional life was one of honor, honesty, skill, caring, creativity, hard work, humor, and more.

I was fortunate enough to have served Mrs. Backer’s Pastry Shop. I always looked forward to seeing and talking with Martin, and all those...

Our hearts are broken from losing you. Things will never be the same. We promise to be there for Mom. We love you.

The Bill Backer Family extends condolences to the Martin Backer Family, especially wife Phoebe. Hearing of his passing was a shock - thought he might go on in this life forever.
