It has been a year already. I know these new anniversaries are difficult. Thinking of your family today.

I believe Mr Benstein was my band teacher in the 1960's. He was a favorite of many and we missed him when he left. It sounds like he had a good life and was loved by family and friends as well as other school bands members.

Mr. Benstein was one of those people that sticks to your heart forever. He taught me more than just 4-6th grade music, but how to appreciate it and infiltrate yourself so deeply with music that no matter how hard life may seem, you have that to make you smile. Without realizing it for much of my adolescent life, he put a spark in me that would grow in to a fine French Horn player and an ambitious student with dreams of being an educator of music. With much love I remember Mr. Benstein every day.

There’s no better word for describing Marty Benstein than “transformational,” for certainly that was the effect that he, with his infectious smile and boundless energy, had on the band, the school, the community and most importantly, his students whenever and wherever he raised his baton. Certainly, that was the case when he arrived at Galesburg-Augusta High School. He turned a rag tag group of less than dedicated students into a cohesive and ultimately award winning group of musicians from...

I remember Mr. Benstein as the man that turned around the G-A music program. As much a leader as a teacher, he challanged us to give our best and would not accept anything less. Esprit de Corps was our new motto. The results speak for themselves.
I am saddened by the loss of such an extrordinary man.

Dear Hannah and family,
As were many, I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Marty's passing. I can't believe how many years have gone by, and the memories recorded here make it seem like it was all just yesterday. He was such an inspiration to me to achieve my best, and I am honored to have been one of his students. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family, and may God comfort you during this time.

Mrs. Benstein and family,
I will never forget the lessons Mr. Benstein taught all of us. We received discipline with love. An example, my freshman year during marching season, I struggled with a specific turn. He had me stay after practice to learn from a senior. (thanks Steve) I was so embarrassed. Next year, Mr Benstein asked me to demonstrate in front of the whole band the same turn. He had a very proud look on his face. I never forgot that.
He will be missed by all. My...
