Colonial Funeral Homes - Brick Obituary

On Wednesday October 27, 2021, Martin A. O’Neill, loving husband and father of three sons passed away at the age of 76.  Marty was born in Newark on October 19, 1945.  He proudly served in the United States Navy on the USS Plymouth Rock.  Upon being discharged from the service he married his highschool sweetheart and the love of his life Joan Matweishyn in 1967.  In 1984 he moved from Hillside NJ to Brick, where he resided for thirty-seven years, before moving to Toms River 10 months ago.

Marty worked as a truck driver and retired from ABF trucking company in 2009 after thirty-three years of employment.  He was a member of the Teamsters Local 560, and served as Shop Steward for many years.  He never complained about his work or the long hours he put in to provide for his family.   He made countless friends during his years with ABF, and always enjoyed sharing his work stories, long after retirement.  Marty had an incredible sense of humor, and always enjoyed joking around with friends or one of his beloved siblings.

Family meant everything to Marty.   He was always proud of his three boys and was quick to brag on any of their accomplishments.  He was a loving and caring father, who made anyone who came over to his house feel welcome.  He was always there for his boys, and could be reached in a moment’s notice, unless it was a weekend where he went ‘off the radar’ and took his loving wife of 54 years to Atlantic City.

Marty’s second career was that of ‘Pop’ and Grandpa. He took great enjoyment in simply spending time with his grandchildren.   Marty loved every moment serving as his grandkids’, daycare center, driver, lifeguard, sports fan and comedian.   He will be greatly missed.

Martin was predeceased by his parents James and Genevieve O’Neill, his  brothers and sister James O’Neill, Maryann Acceturo, Edward and Thomas O’Neill.

Surviving is his wife  Joan Matweishyn O’Neill; three sons Martin O’ Neill and his wife Adina, Matthew O’ Neill and his wife Jaime, and Patrick O’Neill and his wife Jessica; his sister Lenore Ceraso and seven grandchildren Faith, Cooper, Noelle, Brooke, Joseph, Emmy and Bryn.  Marty also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday from 3:00pm- 7:00pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy. 88, Brick.  A funeral service will be held at 6:30pm.  Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Martin’s memory to Wounded Warriors (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or Tunnel to Towers (https://t2t.org).
