Not sure what to say?

We were saddened to learn that both Martin and Carolyn passed in the last few months. They were great friends of Oregon's rivers and Oregon. I recall a pivotal conversation with Martin in Bend in about 2005 where he gave me the long perspective on the Deschutes River and how over time the river might be restored. It certainly changed my thinking on the matter and I often had reason to remember his wise counsel over the years. On behalf of all of us at WaterWatch, we send our condolences and...

Marty spent Thanksgiving with my family in November 1961. My sister and I are the only folks alive to tell the tale. It was a magnificent turkey spread with all the trimmings hosted by my algebra tutor [professor of Engineering at URI, and the only female in the department]. We two teenage males did great service to the main course. That was nothing compared to dessert. We demolished a pie covered with ice cream between the two of us. Marty wrestle 150 which is about what I weighed; that is,...

I met Martin and Carolin when the were living in Tumalo. From the very beginning they were extremely kind and generous to me and my family. While Carolin was the life of the party, Martin was more reserved and observant - but always with a friendly smile and eager to practice his Spanish. Martin connected me to a wonderful family here in Bend, with whom I´m still working after almost 20 years. I will always remember and cherish their friendly visits here in Bend, and in Tumalo with the...

Martin was one of a kind. I'm sad that I hadn't kept in touch with him over the past two years and was unaware of his illness. I wish I could have talked with him one more time. Martin was a major figure in Deschutes Land Trust's work on Whychus Creek, though he would never admit to that. He singlehandedly changed the complexion of Camp Polk Meadow Preserve, his toils translating directly, though not immediately, into beauty. He urged me to move forward with projects when I thought I had...

Martin was a close personal friend for nearly seventy years and his family and mine grew together for over 50 years. I remember days of exploration and adventure at Spirit Lake together with the Malarkey Clan, nights sleeping out under the stars at the cabin in Sisters, tennis games and good conversations over dinner in his mother Mary´s kitchen in her Portland house. Later I remember Martin and his family visiting Doris and our new family in Peru and, after our return to Corvallis, how we...
